The purpose of research described in the current study to investigate the
comparison impact of Word-meaning and Guess techniques on word-meaning and fill-
in-the blank tests, their correlation and procedures on both short-term and long-term
retention of vocabulary items. The importance of this study, to explore about the
condition that the learners are not allowed using Guess technique or randomly answers
the questions in the both tests; however the Guess technique was used in teaching of
vocabulary. Such decision about using the Guess technique in teaching and not using
on testing is done in order to test the role of Guess technique in real understanding of
correct answer. The population for subject recruitment was all under graduated
students from second semester at large university in Iran (both male and female) that
study English as a compulsory paper. In Iran, English is taught as a foreign language.
