Arulselvan started his career as a Journalist with the Tamil Newspaper Dinamalar in 1985. On winning UGC’s Junior Research Fellowship, he moved to Madurai Kamaraj University to pursue his doctoral research programme. He joined MKU as a Lecturer in Journalism and Science Communication on 6th October 1990, in the Government of India's Science Communication project, funded by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication, Dept of Science and Technology. He later moved to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in Jan 1997 to take up further teaching assignment.
