Important to note that maintenance costs, ease of installation, availability to have others review data collected was also key in the bake off. Agency was undergoing security challenges and our group did not own the other products as they were administered by the enterprise team. SolarWinds licenses we had a couple of licenses and could take ownership administratively of product and customize.
Was able to monitor our network devices, vmware host and vm’s, F5’s, avocents, and netapps via snmp v2 going to v3 very soon, this met one of the security stipulations we had to meet. I was also able to send sflow data from our network devices to NTA. This was beneficial in correlating and seeing metrics on data traversing the network and identifying bottlenecks. The added bonus of the integration of NPM and NTA and virtualization feature was the fact that I had the information in one tool. Also was very easy to have other access in a read only mode so no fear of changes being made for users and management to be able to see status and get metrics if needed. Also a good way for our custom reports to be displayed via the report writer. Also setup alerting to send alerts to internal support organizations based upon their wants.

We setup groups to separate and catalog different technologies like vmware hosts, network devices, exchange servers and services we wanted to look at, the correlation between sflow data and snmp metrics.
We also wanted simple layer 2 mapping and the ability to visualize the linkage between devices. Also we needed the ability to provide access to multiple groups for tier 1-3 troubleshooting. The web ui interface is good and customizable and gives us the ability to setup thru AD which we do.
We are running Solarwinds on VmWare 5.0 architecture, we are dedicating 2 VCPU, 4GB RAM, windows 2008 R2, 40GB storage for application server and same specs for database server. Currently not rolling up data between sites but have that on the roadmap.
