Context : Energy Situation in Bangladesh
 Around 100 Million people
have no access to grid
electricity
 Only 3% people have access
to gas through pipelines
 Lack of energy is one of the
major reasons for rural
backwardness
 There is potential of 4 million
Biogas plants in the country
 Climate in Bangladesh is
suitable for Biogas production

Target to 2016
5000 Biogas Plants by the year 2016 under
IDCOL program
250 Biogas Plants by the year 2016 under
Commercial Biogas plant
10,000 Improved Cook Stove Promotion
100% utilization of slurry- biogas
150 Biogas Power generation
50 Community based Biogas plant construction to
supply cooking purposes, that’s IGA
100% Biogas & ICS are in operation
Biogas
Biogas is produced decomposing
organic materials (mainly animal
wastes) in an anaerobic condition.
Major component of this gas is
methane (CH4). It has no color,
smell and it burns like natural gas.
This Biogas use cooking, power
to lighting.
Why Biogas?
 Our climate is suitable for biogas production
 Raw materials are easily available
 Technology is simple and locally available
 All hazardous materials are the raw materials
of a biogas digester like poultry farm waste
 No access of natural gas in rural area
 Shortage of electricity
 Environmental Development

Economic of Biogas Technology
• Saving of expenditures on fuel sources
• Saved time to utilize in other income
generation activities
• Enhanced soil productivity because of the
use bio-slurry (added N,P,K values)
• Reduction in the quantity of chemical
fertilizers due to the use of bio-slurry
• Reduction on health expenditures due to
decrease in smoke-borne diseases
• Employment to local people
• Private sector development that produces
economic goods
Other Benefits of Biogas
• Reduction of work load, especially for
woman
• Biomass Saving
• Useable Organic Fertilizer
• Better sanitation (if toilets attached)
• Improvement of health condition by
reducing Indoor Air Pollution (IAP)
• Employment generation
• Reduction of green house gas
emission

  • 2. Context : Energy Situation in Bangladesh  Around 100 Million people have no access to grid electricity  Only 3% people have access to gas through pipelines  Lack of energy is one of the major reasons for rural backwardness  There is potential of 4 million Biogas plants in the country  Climate in Bangladesh is suitable for Biogas production 3% 97% Beyond gas coverage Gas coverage
  • 3. About Rahman Renewable Energy Rahman Renewable Energy Co. (RREC), Implementation of Renewable Energy program in Bangladesh. Established 2006 as profit company to promote technologies like Biogas- Domestic & Commercial Size, Small Solar Home System, Improved Cook Stoves etc in Rural, Urban Bangladesh.
  • 4. Rahman Renewable Energy Programs  Domestic Biogas & Manure  Dissemination of Commercial Biogas Technology (power, community based)  Human & Kitchen West Based Biogas Technology  Popularizing Improved Cook Stoves (Household & Commercial )  Training and Capacity Building of Renewable Energy Sector  Provide Consultancy Service International Organization: World Bank, USAID, EU, Winrock International, UNHCR, GIZ, SNV, ACF
  • 5. Organizational Status • Total Staff : 45 • Regional Offices : 3 • Unit Offices :12
  • 6. Strategies • Follow IDCOL model for all the Biogas plant up to size 1.6m3 - 4.8 m3 • Follow model Commercial Biogas plant : size 6m3-450m3
  • 7. Ongoing Projects Sl Name of the project Achieve ments Status 1 National Domestic Biogas By IDCOL/ SNV/ Kfw/WB 1385 ongoing 2 Commercial Biogas plant 129 ongoing 3 Improved Cook Stove 2512 ongoing 4 Bio-Electricity Plants under Waste to Energy By : IFC 45 ongoing 5 Consultancy: Climate Change, RGHGE, IAP 15 ongoing 6 Consultancy: Human West Based Biogas plant 37 ongoing
  • 8. Target to 2016 5000 Biogas Plants by the year 2016 under IDCOL program 250 Biogas Plants by the year 2016 under Commercial Biogas plant 10,000 Improved Cook Stove Promotion 100% utilization of slurry- biogas 150 Biogas Power generation 50 Community based Biogas plant construction to supply cooking purposes, that’s IGA 100% Biogas & ICS are in operation
  • 9. Biogas Biogas is produced decomposing organic materials (mainly animal wastes) in an anaerobic condition. Major component of this gas is methane (CH4). It has no color, smell and it burns like natural gas. This Biogas use cooking, power to lighting.
  • 10. Why Biogas?  Our climate is suitable for biogas production  Raw materials are easily available  Technology is simple and locally available  All hazardous materials are the raw materials of a biogas digester like poultry farm waste  No access of natural gas in rural area  Shortage of electricity  Environmental Development
  • 11. Improvements of Biogas System • Mixing Device • Turret • Pipeline • Hydraulic Chamber with slab • Burner • Slurry Processing • Water Drain • Cooking Practice
  • 16. Economic of Biogas Technology • Saving of expenditures on fuel sources • Saved time to utilize in other income generation activities • Enhanced soil productivity because of the use bio-slurry (added N,P,K values) • Reduction in the quantity of chemical fertilizers due to the use of bio-slurry • Reduction on health expenditures due to decrease in smoke-borne diseases • Employment to local people • Private sector development that produces economic goods
  • 17. Other Benefits of Biogas • Reduction of work load, especially for woman • Biomass Saving • Useable Organic Fertilizer • Better sanitation (if toilets attached) • Improvement of health condition by reducing Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) • Employment generation • Reduction of green house gas emission
