Your response to the following essay prompt must be presented as a formal academic essay
and conform to all of the rules and expectations of formal academic writing, including the
guidelines below:Choose a female character from three different stories we have read for
class, and argue for a specific order of individual pathos (a quality that arouses feelings of
sympathy, pity, tenderness, or sorrow). Which character makes the strongest appeal to a
reader’s emotional sympathies and imagination? Which next? And which the least?Besides
the evidence within the stories themselves, you might consider the following for research
topics:Gender roles during the time in which the story was composedCritical response to
the stories and/or the authors’ oeuvresBiographical information of the authors which may
shed light on their workA contemporary readership’s views on male or female identity
(compared to those views which prevailed at the time of each story’s composition)Each
paper must follow these guidelines:Your name, my name, ENG 112, and the due date on the
upper left-hand corner.Final publishs: 5-7 full pages, not counting the Works Cited page.
More is acceptable, but not necessary. Less will result in an automatic drop of one letter
grade before I consider the content. The sources you will use for this assignment are our
class readings from Oates, O’Connor, and Groff (two stories), and three additional sources
from your own research.All essays must be typed using Times New Roman, 12-point
font.Essays must follow MLA standards, be double-spaced, with one-inch margins and last
name and page number on all pages.Papers lacking requirements will automatically be
docked a letter grade.Unless specifically noted by me, I do not accept work via e-mail.This
essay is the first of the two major essays you will write this semester and so is worth 25% of
your course grade. Essay #2 will be worth 35%.This essay requires you to pair three
research materials of your own with your choice of three of our four class readings for
Essay #1, from Oates, O’Connor, and Groff (two stories). Your essay should be composed of
only your own original ideas and language and that which you borrow (and properly
document using in-text citations and a Works Cited page) from the total of 6 sources, no
more or less.You are only required to borrow language or ideas one time each from six
sources, although more is welcome.Nevertheless, this is your essay based on your thesis
statement, and so the majority of the content should be your original thoughts in support of
your original thesis. There is no “rule,” but a paper consisting of more than 20% borrowed
material, i.e. ideas and language not your own, relies too heavily on outside

2. sources.Superficial Elements– avoid the unnecessary use of passive voice (ex. “Trauma is
suffered every day.”)– avoid expletives (“There is,” “There are,” and “It is”)– proofread for
spelling, including titles, authors, and source material– check for a proper Works Cited
page– suggestion: introduce authors of three stories (full name) and their works in intro.
paragraph (only last names afterward); introduce research materials in body paragraphs as
needed– essays must be at least 5 full pages– avoid contractions, slang, or informal
language– no 1st person (I, me, mine, we, us…)– no comma splices, fused sentences, or
fragments– use present tense in signal phrases (ex. Oates writes, “…….”)– check for correct
use of colons and semicolons– short story titles and essay titles in quotation marks;
book/journal/website titles italicized– check for proper formatting (heading, margins,
spacing, font)Argument and Analysis– revise obvious introduction sentence and topic
sentences (ex. “Many women experience pain in their lives.”)– use only the amount of
source material (from stories and research) necessary to argue your thesis– at some point
in your essay, try to combine multiple sources to argue your topic sentence and/or thesis–
do not end paragraphs with another’s words; end on your own argument– make sure your
thesis and topic sentences express claims rather than statements– fully develop your
paragraphs or combine them; 3 sentences or less is usually too short– avoid extended
summary or paraphrasing; use only the source material that is germane to your

rough publish (2/18/23). If you feel it can all be done today that is okay with me, if you can
go ahead submit the first 3 pages by 11;59pm today I will then extend the order so you can
