Hematochezia would occur secondary to upper GI bleeding when there is bleeding in the stomach or small intestine. When bleeding occurs in the upper GI tract, the blood can pass through the entire GI tract without being digested. This causes the stool to appear black and tarry, known as hematochezia, as the blood reaches the colon. Bowel sounds may also be hyperactive during GI bleeding, as the presence of blood in the intestines can stimulate bowel motility.
