2. Introduction
Based in Denver, Scott F. Gelbard has
established a successful career in investment
and business strategy consulting. Outside of
work, he has significant experience as a
hockey and soccer coach. Scott Gelbard
coached soccer at Regis Jesuit High School
for several years and now coaches for the
Real Colorado Soccer club in Douglas County.
Both of his sons play in this league.
3. About Coaching
As a coach, Scott Gelbard understands the
difficulty involved in fine-tuning certain skills.
One of the most essential skills in soccer is
passing, and coaches must consistently
reinforce this ability with drills. One effective
drill involves using cones to set up "gates" for
pairs of players. The players take turns trying
to pass through the gate to the other player
without touching either of the cones.
4. Conclusion
At the beginning, coaches should set the
cones relatively far apart, maybe a few yards.
Over time, the coach can bring the cones
closer together or move the pairs farther apart
to make the drill more difficult and refine player
abilities. Throughout the drill, the coach should
provide consistent feedback, so that players
can adjust their approaches to passing and
ultimately become stronger athletes.
