The first monument visitors see when arriving in Cagliari is the Basilica of Bonaria, which houses a statue of the Virgin Mary that mysteriously arrived from the sea. The Bastione Saint Remy offers breathtaking views of Cagliari after climbing its 170 steps. The oldest church is the Basilica of San Saturnino, built in the 5th century AD. When the Romans conquered Cagliari they built an amphitheater that could hold 10,000 spectators, and now hosts performances. During Pisan rule from 1216-1326 the city was fortified with walls and towers, some of which still stand like the Elephant and San Pancrazio towers. Renzo P
