Efforts to Promote Open Science in European Research Libraries

LIBER Europe

The European Library (www.theeuropeanlibrary.org) is a multilingual portal offering integrated access to the tens of millions of resources (books, magazines, journals...) of 18 national libraries in Europe. It offers free searching and delivers both digital and non-digital objects. It provides a vast virtual collection of mate-rials from all disciplines. The European Library is currently being expanded with the holdings of the national libraries of the 10 EU New Member States. From September 2006 onwards the remaining EU and EFTA na-tional libraries will be connected to TheEuropeanLibrary.org, bringing the total number of participating na-tional libraries to ±35 by the end of 2008. In the beginning of 2006 the EC expressed support for The European Library to evolve into a much bigger European Digital Library (EDL), including access to the digital collections of other major cultural heritage institutions, such as museums and archives. The EDL is planned to include the holdings of all European na-tional libraries and a minimum of 2M digital works by the end of 2008. By 2010 the EDL needs to have ex-panded to include collections of archives, museums and other libraries, with a minimum of 6M digital works. The European Library aims to remain a major player in the European cultural heritage field and is already strengthening its cooperation with other relevant key initiatives, such as MACS, DELOS, MICHAEL, BRICKS and MINERVA.  Janssen, O.D. Europeana Cloud – New Spaces for Sharing Content Europeana Cloud is a Best Practice Network, coordinated by The European Library, designed to establish a cloud-based system for Europeana and its aggregators. Lasting from 2013 to 2015, Europeana Cloud will provide new content, new metadata, a new linked storage system, new tools and services for researchers and a new platform - Europeana Research. Content providers and aggregators across the European information landscape urgently need a cheaper, more sustainable infrastructure that is capable of storing both metadata and content. Researchers require a digital space where they can undertake innovative exploration and analysis of Europe's digitised content. Europeana needs to get closer to the target of 30 million items by 2015. Europeana Cloud meets these needs.

Digital cultural heritage as humanities data: a labs approach

This presentation was delivered as one of the keynotes at the 23rd International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL 2019) on 9-12 September 2019 at OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University, Oslo, Norway. http://www.tpdl.eu/tpdl2019/keynotes/ Can we consider libraries as the laboratories of the humanities? If so, would they be good places to observe and better understand the everyday practices of the humanist at work? Similarly, can the notion of the laboratory as a place of scientific experimentation be applied to libraries as a place to experiment with digital cultural heritage collections? Could “library labs” enable humanities researchers, cultural heritage professionals and computer scientists to work more closely together to push the boundaries of contemporary humanistic enquiry? Using Bruno Latour’s anthropological observations of the scientific practices of biologists in their laboratory as a starting point, we will consider the concept of libraries as the laboratories of the humanities. Extending this concept further, we will consider, “what is a library lab?” by examining the activities of library labs internationally. Finally, we will introduce the emerging Digital Research Lab at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) as part of a long-term collaboration with the Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities (GhentCDH). Using “KBR Labs” as a case study, we will consider the role that library labs could play as experimental incubators for digital humanities research.

Presentation held (remotely) at: The "Web Archiving: Best Practices for Digital Cultural Heritage" international conference is organized by The National Library of Israel and the Open Media and Information Lab (OMILab) at the Open University of Israel. (http://webarchiving2018.nli.org.il) The Belgian web is not currently systematically archived. As a result, there is a considerable risk that a significant portion of Belgian contemporary history will be lost forever. To prevent this, the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) funded the PROMISE (Preserving Online Multiple Information: towards a Belgian Strategy) project The aim of PROMISE is to: (i) identify current best practices in web-archiving (ii) pilot web-archiving in Belgium, including access (and use) for scientific research, and (iii) make recommendations for a sustainable web-archiving service for Belgium. This paper will present the current status of the PROMISE project, including the latest results.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
