This document presents an "integrative EA competencies fractal map" to assess and develop EA skills. It rates various subject areas on a scale of 1 to 5 based on their strategic importance. It is difficult to achieve the highest rating of 4 in all areas, as subjects become more integrated at higher levels. However, having a rating of 4 in areas with weightings of 3 has more business potential than just one area with a weighting of 4. The map provides a way to cumulatively score and track skills development across multiple, interrelated subject areas that make up overall EA competencies.
1. Integrative EA Competencies – a Fractal Map
Strategic Studies Subject Skill Rating
– “5” Expert = 4
Extensive and substantial practical experience
and applied knowledge on the subject
Program Knowledge = 3
Technologies & Management – Detailed knowledge of subject area and
Tools – “2” “4” capable of providing professional advice and
guidance. Ability to integrate capability into
architecture design
Awareness = 2
Understands the background, issues and
Tactical implications sufficiently to be able to
Domain Architecture understand how to process further and advice
the client accordingly
Experience – “3” Analysis & - “3” Background = 1
Design Posses skill just enough to converse in the
subject area.
Infrastructure
Architecture – “3”
In each of the above subject areas having appropriate weightages against overall backdrop – EA competencies
development targets to achieve ‘skill rating level 4’. This is an impossible goal. However, as specialist and
generalist evolve they acquire different levels in different subject areas bringing varied impact into business
consulting. Combination of skills eventually overcomes the constraint of individual learning abilities. It is easier to
achieve skills rating in linear subject areas (weightages 2 & 3). As one scales up it is much more difficult, since
subjects tends to become integrative and intuitive. However, in general having rating “4” in all subject areas with

weightages 3 has much business potential than having rating “4” in subject area with weightage 4 alone.
