Development and Adoption of Annual
Strawberry Production in the Great Plains
C.L. Rivard, K. Oxley, M. Taylor, M. Kennelly, D. Pryor, and M. Bates
Jerry Wohletz
Lawrence, KS
Project Objectives
Increasing the regional production distribution
• To verify the utility of annual plasticulture
production and deliver crop budgets to growers.
• To determine the optimum application timing and
thickness of row covers for open-field production.
• To determine how row covers affect the soil and
canopy microclimate in the open-field.
• To investigate the utility of spring-planted, day-
neutral production in high tunnels.
• To determine how evaporative cooling affects crop
performance and disease incidence (pre- and post-
harvest) for high tunnel strawberry production.
• To disseminate crop production information to
growers in the Great Plains.

Trial Description: The trial will be made up of 48 plots (10’ length) and
designed in split-plot design with four replications. Main plot
treatments are with and without evaporative cooling and sub-plots are
the varieties. The trial will be located on four rows in a three season
high tunnel with 30% shade cloth.
