We begin with the most common chord shapes. In this section you
can find major chords (root, major third and perfect fifth), minor
chords (root, minor third and perfect fifth) and dominant seventh
(root, major third, perfect fifth and minor seventh). These shapes
are in first position and use open strings.

dominant chords a lot, for example try this basic blues

Now it's time to leave the first position of the neck and start to
explore the whole fretboard. All the following shapes don't use any
open strings, so you can move the shape along the freatboard in
order to get chords with different

one shape for all the different 12 possible root notes. For example,

highlighted the C major triad (C, E, G). To obtain the F major triad
(F, A, C), is enough to translate the shape five fret above, without
changing the geometry. This is a feature of trasposing instruments
like the guitar. Apply the same logic to all the following movable
chord shapes.

In the following diagrams, the root note is marked with a circle. For
example, the chord shape of a dominant seventh chord with the
root of the A string, is the following:
If you want to take a C7 chord, you have to take as root note the C.
As previously said, the root note in the diagram is marked with a
circle. So, in order to take a C7, the root note has to be a C, that on
the A string is placed on the 3rd fret.
With the same logic, if you want to take a D7, you have to start
with the root note on the fifth fret of the A string (D).
