“Was built” is passive. Compare active and passive:
Somebody built this house in 1930. (active)

This house was built in 1930. (passive)

SIMPLE PRESENT AND SIMPLE PAST
We use an active verb to say what the subject does:
• My grandfather was a builder. He built this house in 1930.
• It’s a big company. It employs two hundred people.
• We use a passive verb to say what happens to the subject:
• This house is quite old. It was built in 1930.
• Two hundred people are employed by the company.
• If we want to say who does or what causes the action, we use “by…”
• This house was built by my grandfather.
• Two hundred people are employed by the company.
PASSIVE VOICE
(IS DONE/WAS DONE)
The passive is: be = (is/are/was/were) + the past participle (done/cleaned/seen)

Art Collectors buy famous paintings Famous paintings are bought by Art
all over the world. collectors all over the world.
She breaks the glass. The glass is broken by her.

REMEMBER:
The past participle in regular verbs is the same ending –ed, not the past participle when we are talking
about irregular verbs. You have to be very careful with them; those normally go in the third column from
whatever irregular verbs list, THIRD COLUMN!!!(PAST PARTICIPLE)

Actions at the same time?
Do you want to express that the actions in the past happened one after another or
at the same time?

New action or already in progress?
If you want to express that a new action happened in the middle of another
action, you need both tenses: Simple Past the new action and Past Progressive
for the action already in progress.

mobile suddenly rang.)
Only mentioning or emphasizing progress?
Do you just want to mention that an action took place in the past (also used for
short actions)? Or do you want to put emphasis on the progress, e.g. that an action
was taking place at a certain time?

Colin played football yesterday.

Yesterday at six o'clock, Colin was
playing football.
Certain Verbs
The following verbs are usually only used in Simple Past (not in the progressive
form).
• state: be, cost, fit, mean, suit.
Example: We were on holiday.
• possession: belong, have.
Example: Sam had a cat.
• senses: feel, hear, see, smell, taste, touch.
Example: He felt the cold.
• feelings: hate, hope, like, love, prefer, regret, want, wish.
Example: Jane loved pizza.
• brain work: believe, know, think, understand.
Example: I did not understand him.
