Lesson-02
WHAT IF ONE IS UNSUCCESSFUL ON THIS PATH OF
DEVOTION? WHAT IF HE GIVES UP IN BETWEEN BEING
DISTRACTED?
Krishna assures that he will not be a loser. Whatever
progress he has already made will be preserved. Such a
person will get anotherchance to perfect his life. This is
the glory of Krishna and Krishna’s bhakti or devotional
service.
Different examples from scriptures are very illustrative of
this fact:
Pastimes of MaharajaBharat & King Indradyumna
Bharata Maharaj: He was very advanced in devotional
service and reached to the platformof bhava, or ecstatic
devotion. But due to attachment to a deer, he stopped his
2. spiritual practices and next life, he became a deer because
of thinking too much about the deer. But by Krishna’s
grace, even in the deer life, he retained his old memory
and next life, he became Jada Bharata. He continuedhis
practice of bhakti in his life as Jada Bharat carefully
avoiding all association of materialist. Thus he attained
perfection in bhakti in that life.
King Indradyumna: He was a devotee of the Lord but fell
down from his devotional service and became an elephant
king Gajendra in his next life. He was engrossed in
enjoyment, but then he was caught by a crocodileand was
struggling for his life. Because of his devotional service
of previous life, he could remember Lord Krishna in this
time of emergency, and Lord appeared to rescue him and
take him back to Godhead.
MORAL: On the path of devotion, thereis no loss. One
gets repeatedopportunitiesto reform.
Who is the highest among all the yogis (spiritualists)?
Krishna declares that the devotee is the best among all
yogis. So one should become devotee of Krishna. This is
clear from the fact that Krishna has chosen Arjuna to give
the instructionsof Gita. Arjuna is neither a meditator, nor
a monk. He is neither a Vedantist nor a scholar of
scriptures. But he has one qualification which is superior
3. to all the others. He is an unalloyed devotee of Krishna.
And that’s what pleases Krishna.
Prahlad Maharaj says: One may possess wealth, an
aristocratic family, beauty, austerity, education,sensory
expertise, luster, influence, physical strength, diligence,
intelligence and mystic yogic power, but I think that even
by all these qualifications one cannot satisfy the Supreme
Personality of Godhead. However, one can satisfy the
Lord simply by devotional service. Gajendra did this, and
thus the Lord was satisfied with him.
Pastimeof Durvasa Muni and AmbarishMaharaja
Ambarish Maharaj was a devotee and Durvasa was mystic
yogi. Durvasa tried to harm Ambarish Maharaj for
whimsical reasons but Ambarish Maharaj did not protest.
But Lord’s sudarshan disc at once came to protect
Ambarish and the disc attacked Durvasa. Finally, Durvasa
took shelter of Ambarish Maharaja and Ambarish
Maharaj kindly forgave Durvasa. Here, the great mystic
Durvasa himself accepts the glorious position of a devotee
of the Lord.
MORAL: Thus bhakti is superiorto all karma, gyana,
meditationand yoga practices.
