1. THE FLAME OF UBUNTU : PLAY FOR CBC 2014 2
BACKGROUND : VOICE: Ubuntu is the African word widely used for doing good to your
fellowman. This play wishes to portray our uniqueness in our desire to spread Ubuntu -
goodness and kindness of the human spirit to those who are in need of it. CBC St. Joseph's
College, stands for lifting the spirit of all, lending a helping hand, mending those who are
broken in spirit, giving hope to the hopeless and putting a smile on the faces of the forgotten of
this world. Through this play, we wish to build bridges with our fellow peers across the length
and breadth our beautiful planet and in the process learn more about their culture and way of
life. May we achieve our ultimate goal, learning to respect, tolerate and understand our
differences and to embrace who we are and who we desire to become.
Our matric learners are responsible for conveying this powerful message.
SCENE ONE: GRADE ONE, TWO AND THREE ( A big map of the world is the back drop and as the

South African landscape and people as well as images of countries that are visited.

African flags. A party atmosphere is created by music playing, people are walking toward the
platform where all activity is to take place. A distinguished man, wearing a suit and tie enters

the crowd of people.

in the Olympics)

men and women who will venture into the world spreading the flame of Ubuntu across the
world. They will travel to all the countries of the world to convey our message of Ubuntu to all
peoples of our world. They will bring South Africa into the spotlight in a positive way by leading
and teaching the rest of the world what Ubuntu truly means ,the rise of the human spirit to do
good to all mankind, to recognise God in the eyes of all our fellow brothers and sisters and to
portray His love and kindness to one another. To touch the lives of others and make a
difference in the lives they touch. As they carry the flame that represents our Ubuntu, let their
fires burn strongly in their hearts and let them never lose courage in this venture.
APPLAUSE
MC: I now call on the leader of the of this group (Head Boy)_________________. APPLAUSE
LEADER: It all started as a desire in each one of us, when we were given the task to make a
difference in the life of just one person. Individually we saw what an impact we made on the
people we identified as needy and needed our assistance. We then realised that our journey in
this life is not to become self absorbed and selfish, but to make a difference in the lives of those
who are less fortunate . What is the sense of living when life is not fulfilled. We realise that it is
our duty to make life meaningful to those who are destitute and therefore make life meaningful
to us as well and the words “because we can” became our motto. We had many fruitful
meetings and together came up with the idea to take our flame of Ubuntu and share it with
young people around the world and to show that through hope, love and kindness we can
change our world into a better place. We will carry our torch of hope around the world and
light the torches of other countries so that they too can spread Ubuntu in the lives of people in
their countries. We accept this opportunity gracefully to represent our country.
APPLAUSE
MC: We now have our different cultural groups to wish our ambassadors well on their journey.

Voice: Our matrics now travel to the country that is known as Jewel of Europe, Italy. If you look
at the map of the world, Italy has the shape of a very elegant boot. There are so many beautiful
sights in Italy that takes your breath away. The Collosium in Rome is an ancient building that
dates back to the time of the Roman Empire. Most of the Italians practise Catholism as a
religion. The Vatican City, close to Rome is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. The
Pope lives in the Vatican City and Catholics throughout the world visit St. Peters Basilica, the
Cathedral in the Vatican City. Italy is well known for the country that gave the world the recipes
of pizza and pasta.

honour and privilege for us, the Roman Catholic clergy to accept your gracious gift of Ubuntu.
Edmund Rice was a great ambassador for the Catholic Church just as you are now ambassadors
for the Catholic Church by spreading hope, love and kindness around the world.
Matric : We feel as if we have arrived at our second home. Thank you for accepting our gift of
Ubuntu (hands over torch). It is because of people like Edmund Rice that we are inspired to do
good. He has left us a legacy which we need to uphold. If we keep on reminding ourselves of
the sacrifices he made to uplift the lives or the poor and hopeless and act on the noble efforts

SCENE SEVEN: GRADE NINE
Voice: The next leg of the journey takes our Ubuntu ambassadors to the romantic city of Paris
in France. This city of lights boasts with the beautiful Eifel Tower and impressive Arc de
Triumph. The elegant cafes which line the pavements, shows off its equally elegant people. It is
the capital city of fashion and style. However, France has its share of a turbulent history.
History teaches us that the French Revolution which took place from 1787 to 1799 was about
the battle to achieve equality and to remove oppression. The aristocracy with King Louise xv1 at
its head, were abusing their titles and the commoners were no longer wanting to live under
these unfair conditions. His wife, Marie Antoinette made this famous comment of commoners
“if they don’t have bread to eat give them cake.” Let’s just say this story did not have a good
ending for her or her husband.
As the curtain opens, the Eifel tower can be seen and elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen
are sitting at round tables and chairs. A man playing the violin walks the streets and artists
wearing French beres can be seen painting on their canvases.
ACT SEVEN
Two men with moustache dressed in suits welcome the matrics
Frenchman: Bonjour, Bonjour, welcome to our beautiful country. It is a great privilege for us to
welcome all of you to France. Your flame shines so brightly and brings so much love, peace and
hope with it. Come, come let us light our flame and so bring the flame of your Ubuntu to our
people too. (takes flame and light their own torch). We the French people take great pleasure
in our food and wine. We take our time to prepare our food, it is like a form of art to us, it must
look as great as it tastes. The same with our wine, we produce of the finest wines in the world.
We also pride ourselves in our houte coutier, our designers make the most beautiful clothes.
Matric: We know we are in the fashion capital of the world and we cannot wait to explore your
beautiful country and sample of your food and wine. But before we do, please allow us to
express our people’s desire to share our Ubuntu with the people of your country.
Frenchman: We accept your gift with much gratitude. As a token of our thanks we will now
have this group of people dance for you.
The Grade nines get up from tables and chairs and start dancing to French music. They dance in
9. pairs. As the music ends, Grade nine’s move move off the stage and curtains close.
SCENE EIGHT: GRADE TEN
Voice: The journey to the north of France, takes our Ubuntu ambassadors to England. The
Industrial Revolution which started in England, transformed the world forever. This transition
included moving from hand production to machine production with the introduction of water
power, speeding up the process of production. Had it not been for the Industrial Revolution,
the world as we know it today would have been very different and we would still have been
using primitive methods of producing things. We owe our gratitude to the English people for
the advancement in industry. Great English writers such as Shakespeare and Alexander Pope
have promoted the English language to great heights. The English have also produced some of
the great names in music like the Beatles, Elton John, Westlife, Spice girls to name but a few.
As the curtain opens Buckingham Palace with its guards dressed in their uniform can be seen.
Many people (Grade ten learners) waving the British flag line the streets awaiting the arrival of
the Ubuntu carriers. As they disembark, they are welcomed by shouts of hoorah.
ACT EIGHT:
Matric : Wow, we are overwhelmed by this great welcome, thank you very much. It is our great
honour and pleasure to be in your country and to hand over to you and your people South
Africa’s wish of Ubuntu.
English Rep: We are amazed at your courage and bravery and we are witness to the fact that
your flame of Ubuntu shines brightly within your souls. We will honour your achievements by
graciously accepting your flame and work hard to make Ubuntu a part of our daily lives. Now sit
back and relax as we honour you with our nation’s best music talents.
4 Grade 10 boys dressed as Beatles perform
5 Grade 10 girls dressed as Spice Girls perform
5 Grade 10 learners dressed as West life perform
As the curtain close, they move off the stage.
10. +SCENE NINE: GRADE ELEVEN
Voice: There is much excitement amongst our Ubuntu Ambassaders as they make their way to
America. This is their last voyage before they return home. America is the land where many
people fled to to seek freedom from their oppressive native countries. They travelled far and
wide to seek fortune in a country that practised freedom of the human spirit and equality to all
people. The statue of Liberty in New York embraces these qualities and as she stands with her
torch, she represents all that Ubuntu stands for.
As curtains opens, the statue of liberty is seen. Many people waving the American flags are
waiting for the arrival of the Ububtu torch.
ACT NINE:
American Rep: We have waited for your arrival for so long. We know what your Ubuntu means
and it speaks to the hearts of the American people. We want to share the spirit of Ubuntu with
all our people as well as with the rest of the world. Thank you for your contribution in helping
us to try to make this world a better place for all human beings.
Matric: (hands over the flame) with this flame, we wish to conquer all negative attitudes in
people that allow war, terrorism and hatred. We wish to promote positive attitudes such as
peace, love and understanding amongst all nations in our world. Our children must grow up
without fear. We must ensure that their future is filled with prosperity. As we come to the end
of our journey of Ubuntu, we hope that we achieved a goal that will change the world and
make it a better place for all human beings.
American rep: We the American people have achieved so much, yet it seems as if we need to
look at ourselves to make these changes, and because of this we have chosen to sing a song to
you that makes us question ourselves and dares us to start changing from within.
Enter the choir (made up of grade eleven)
They sing the song “Man in the Mirror’ by Michael Jackson.
As the song comes an end, the grade elevens walk down the aisle out the front door singing all
the time.
11. SCENE AND ACT TEN:
Many people line the streets awaiting the Matics of CBC with South African flags flying high.
Voice: And so our UBUNTU WARRIORS come back to South Africa Victoriously.
As they disembark they sing: Peace in our land
Ending with the song of Micasa: these streets.
