SYMA members are working overtime towards the all important celebrations on Oct 2nd. Our Medical
centrewas started on 16th August 1989 and we are planning to celebrate our 25 years of medical service
in a grand way. On Gandhi Jayanthi day, we are having a medical camp at SHG Terapanth Bhavan, to
be inaugurated by Dr J Radhakrishnan, IAS, Secretary to Govt, Health and Family Welfare Dept., It is the
good fortune of SYMA that His Holiness Sri Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, Pontiff of Kanchi Mutt
will be blessing us and release the special souvenir on the occasion. We invite you all for the function and
the invitations are on page 3.
We intend honouring all our Doctors who have provided medical consultation at our Centre as also all
our volunteers who have strived over the years rendering service with great commitment. We look forward
to all our members and supporters to join us in this task. Special thanks to all of you for sourcing
advertisements and funds for the souvenir.
India and the United States kicked off a crucial dialogue with the US leaders saying America wants to
be “India’s best friend” and India asserting that their relationship is defined by natural synergy of
democracies. The assertions were made at a business conclave and the statement of US Vice President
Joe Biden that their goal is to become India’s best friend does assume significance.
Back home, Pretoria is embarking on a 72 day tour scheduled to play 3 T20, 5 ODI and 4 Tests. The
series is known as Mahatma Gandhi-Nelson Mandela series, with the teams playing for the Freedom
Trophy. Uncapped off-spinning, hard-hitting all rounder from Punjab, Gurkeerat Singh has been picked.
Moving on, this attempt at Gurgaon ‘Car Free day’ deserves appreciation. It is stated that more than 400
buses will be made available for commuters and the Organisers have even received demands for bicycles
from various corporate houses and the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon. The move is expected to reduce
the vehicular traffic at least for a day as many are expected to shun their cars and turn to public transport.
Will such a thing happen in Chennai and other metropolis too ?
Invite you all for our Function on Oct 2nd. With regards – S. Sampathkumar.

Sept. 11, was not just another day – ~ World over, it is
remembered for different reasons – at USA it rekindles that
black day of 2001 when World Trade centre was razed to the
ground with hundreds getting killed; it is the day on which
Swami Vivekananda addressed at Chicago. It is the day when
MahakaviSubrahmaniyaBarathi, passed away [though it is
corrected to be 12thSept 1921 !]
Safety is everybody’s concern accidents unfortunately do
occur – lot many of them can be avoided by observing safety
and many lives saved by immediately attending to them. All
users of a road including pedestrians, cyclists, motorists,
passengers in vehicles, its drivers and others face risk on
road. Best-practice road safety strategies focus upon the
prevention of serious injury and death.
Accidents could be avoided if road rules are followed
properly and citizens, especially students are vested with the
responsibility of educating others on road safety. India should
press for concrete measures in the proposed sustainable
development goals (SDG) by the United Nations with an aim
to halving the number of deaths in road accidents, Road,
Transport and Highways Minister NitinGadkari has said.
Nearer home, we have Kasturba Gandhi hospital [popularly
Gosha hospital] which dates back to 1890s. The Madras
government took over the management of this hospital in
1921. Inside this century old institution, a wonderful service
functions – tens of thousands of calls made everyday seeking
emergency aid lands here, for it is here the Office and call
centre of 108 Ambulance services of Tamilnadu functions.
It is a fine example of Govt Private joint entrepreneurship.
GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute (GVK
EMRI), the major corporate social responsibility arm of GVK,
was established in April, 2005. It provides integrated
Emergency Response services promptly responding to
millions of emergencies and save lives nationally. Now it is
functional in more than 14 states. In Tamilnadu alone it has
more than 600 ambulance that include a fleet specialising neo-
natal care.
On Friday evening, Executive from EMRI 108 services, Mr
B Prabhudoss was at our SYMA Growth talking to more than
100 students with scores of interested parents. He started with
the video of our Hon’ble APJ [who unfortunately is not alive]
who was Chairman Emeritus of EMRI.The videos depicting the
activities of 108 ~ and the way they respond; the facilities
available inside the ambulance which looks like a fortified
hospital capable of providing critical health care were well
received. Mr Prabhudoss drove home the point that people
should readily come forward to help those in distress. It was
demonstrated by a call to 108 from a mobile. At the time of
calling, the caller should clearly say the basic information like
: the exact location of the incident [place/ street/ city / district
– identifiable landmark etc.,]; the type of emergency; no. of
mtru cjɡF 108
people injured and condition of the injured. The caller’s name
and contact no. to facilitate location guidance.
A couple of new things learnt other than many other useful
info : For calling there is no age limit; even children can call
but – absolutely no prank calls. Remember that such a play
could harm the attention and care for somebody direly in need
of ambulance. The well-trained drivers are known as ‘ pilots ’
– the attendants are so well trained that can use injections on
moving vehicle even to extremely delicate kids. Ambulances
are equipped with extrication tools too. People should
accompany the injured person, only when necessary. They
can assist by taking care of the belongings of the injured,
informing their relatives and friends and the like but without
exaggerating and without creating too much of fear and
commotion.
Ambulances will carry those affected persons safely – to
the Govt hospital or to a nearby well-equipped hospital, if the
patient or their close relatives decide so.
With so many vehicles, good infrastructure, motivated
people at the helm, trained staff – the well-meaning initiative
of 108 is really doing wonders – in the city where traffic is
always chaotic and not many realise the need for drawing to the
left, leave the right lane clear for the ambulance movement.
Simplest of the things that drivers can do – is – don’t wait till
the ambulance is behind you – once you hear the siren or are
aware of the emergency, please do not keep driving, take your
vehicle to the left lane – leave a clear path. One can get
delayed to Office or to a meeting, to a cinema, or anything else
- those in ambulance must be taken to the hospital at the
earliest and it is bounden duty of every citizen to ensure that
such a thing happens.
The programme certainly made a good impact on the minds
of listeners. Mr Prabhu further dwelt on another important
service ‘ 104 ’ – an initiative of Tamil Nadu Health System
Project, this service is also operated by GVK-Emergency
Management and Research Institute (EMRI). Understand that
they have mapped the entire public and private health care
institutions across Tamil Nadu. Callers from any part of the
State would be directed to the nearest healthcare with requisite
facilities to treat ailments.
The primary objective of the helpline is to provide the
caller with the immediate home remedies for most
aliments such as vomiting and minor injuries. A team of
doctors have been deployed exclusively to man the
helpline. However, if they feel that a physical intervention
is required the caller will be immediately referred to a
hospital and the call transferred to 108 Emergency
Response services.
SYMA records its thanks and gratitude to GVK
EMRI and to Mr B Prabhudoss.

SALUTE THE MEN IN UNIFORM
Great hearty salute to these men ! – they safeguard the Nation, protecting people like us.Do you love Hockey and have
a liking for Hockey players ~do you know the names of our National heroes away from remembering Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni,
Kohli, Ashwin…… our love, affection and respect for them would go many notches, after reading this. Jugraj Singh,
DaljitDhillon& his brother Baljit, all played for India.
Suspected Pakistani terrorists stormed a police station in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district on 27th July 2015, killing seven people
and wounding 10 others – the terror strike came weeks after Prime ministers Shri NarendraModi and Nawaz Sharif met in Russia
and agreed that top security officers from the two countries would meet to discuss counter-terrorism. The 11-hour siege in
Punjab ended after government forces surrounded the building in Dinanagar town and gunned down the three militants suspected
to be from Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The area’s superintendent of police (detective), Baljit Singh, was among
those killed, apart from three security personnel and three civilians.
Dhyan Chand, the wizard known for his superb ball control, scored more than 400 goals during his international career. This
Rajput joined the Indian Army at an young age and in the initial years, played army hockey tournaments and regimental games.
We should hail our hockey stars – not only for playing the National game – more for this – the stars were part of Gurdaspur
Operations. ***
Press reports statged that - three former Indian hockey players - drag flick expert Jugraj Singh, former India captain Baljit
Dhillon and his brother DaljitDhillon, were all called to join the Punjab Police team which was involved in the operation to eliminate
the terrorists who had attacked the border town of Dinanagar near Gurdaspur on July 27. The trio had been rushed to Gurdaspur
from their place of posting soon after the attack on the police station.Daljit (DSP-Attari, Kapurthala) and Jugraj (DSP-
Investigation, Amritsar Rural) were part of the operation during the day while Baljit, Superintendent of Police, Investigation
(Hoshiarpur), was asked to be ready for action if the operation stretched beyond the evening. The star player said that there
was only one thought when he received the orders – to save the people. “We had no feeling. No fear. The only thing on our
minds was to achieve our target, to save the people,” he said. Baljit said he was lucky to get the opportunity to serve the country
in its hour of crisis. “Yeh to farzbantahai (This is my duty). It’s an honour to be part of the Punjab Police and get such
opportunities to serve the country.
Homage to the fearless SP Baljit Singh and other cops who died in action and appreciations to the Hockey stars – Baljit
Singh, Daljit Singh and Jugraj.

opportunities; This year we have an
additional section in X Std. Now we have 2

In our Educational Aid Function, every

retired as Headmistress of NKT National
Boys High School in 2000 after completing

EYE CAMP ON 15.8.2015
On the great day of our National Independence, SYMA continues
to dedicate itself to the service of the Nation, remember the patriotic
deeds and sacrifices of so many, because of whom we are breathing
free air. At 8.30 am, the National flag was hoisted by Dr Ashok
Rangarajan, Director, Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal.
After this, we proceeded to Triplicane Permanent Fund. Over the
past decade and half and more, we have been conducting Eye Camp
on Nation’s Independence Day. Every year, it has been happening
at Sri SeerviSamajBhavan, whose management have been
associating with us for the event. This year due to construction
activities, the venue was not available and Triplicane Permanent
Fund readily pitched in.
At 9.00am the Eye Camp was inaugurated at Fund
KalyanaMantap at Singarachari Street. This camp for detection of
cataract was organized in association with Pammal Sri Sankara Eye
Hospital, Lions Club of ChennaiVeenus, Sri KanchikamakotiSankara
Medical Trust and Triplicane Permanent Fund.
It is our fortune to be associated with a great hospital committed
to serving poor, stretching out to small villages and helping more than
2 lakh people providing vision. Miracles cannot cure blind but
together we can is their catchline. It is heartening to know that they
have recently expanded in a big way at far off Samarjhola, Odisha
with a multibedded hospital that has facilities for comprehensive eye
Care, investigations and outpatient treatment, low vision clinic,
contact lens clinic, special clinic for children, micro phaco cataract
surgeries for spectacle free vision, and glaucoma services. We are
ever thankful to the Doctors, Medical and other staff of Sankara Eye
Hospital and special thanks are due to Mr J Babu.
More than 250 persons had registered in the camp. Around 190
were screened. More than 20 were found requiring cataract surgery.
15 persons were taken to the hospital at Pammal and underwent
cataract surgery. 25 persons were prescribed spectacles – and were
given free – in memory of our beloved KE Raghavan, who was
snatched away from our midst few years ago. We place on record
our appreciation to Mr MA Sadagopan for the coordination and
arrangement of the Eye Camp. A group of our Office bearers visited
them and enquired their well being. Those underwent operation
were brought back and dropped at Triplicanea day after surgery.
The beneficiaries were very happy and blessed SYMA for our
active social service and wished the well being of all of us. We at
SYMA continue to strive for the betterment of society and provide
helping hand to the poor and needy

The well-trained drivers are known as ‘ pilots ’ – the attendants are so well trained that can use injections on moving vehicle even to extremely delicate kids. Ambulances are equipped with extrication tools too. People should accompany the injured person, only when necessary. They can assist by taking care of the belongings of the injured, informing their relatives and friends and the like but without exaggerating and without creating too much of fear and commotion. Ambulances will carry those affected persons safely – to the Govt hospital or to a nearby well-equipped hospital, if the patient or their close relatives decide so. With so many vehicles, good infrastructure, motivated people at the helm, trained staff – the well-meaning initiative of 108 is really doing wonders – in the city where traffic is always chaotic and not many realise the need for drawing to the left, leave the right lane clear for the ambulance movement. Simplest of the things that drivers can do – is – don’t wait till the ambulance is behind you – once you hear the siren or are aware of the emergency, please do not keep driving, take your vehicle to the left lane – leave a clear path. One can get delayed to Office or to a meeting, to a cinema, or anything else - those in ambulance must be taken to the hospital at the earliest and it is bounden duty of every citizen to ensure that such a thing happens. The programme certainly made a good impact on the minds of listeners. Mr Prabhu further dwelt on another important service ‘ 104 ’ – an initiative of Tamil Nadu Health System Project, this service is also operated by GVK-Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI). Understand that they have mapped the entire public and private health care institutions across Tamil Nadu. Callers from any part of the State would be directed to the nearest healthcare with requisite facilities to treat ailments. The primary objective of the helpline is to provide the caller with the immediate home remedies for most aliments such as vomiting and minor injuries. A team of doctors have been deployed exclusively to man the helpline. However, if they feel that a physical intervention is required the caller will be immediately referred to a hospital and the call transferred to 108 Emergency Response services. SYMA records its thanks and gratitude to GVK EMRI and to Mr B Prabhudoss.
