3. The writer of 90210 is D-stuart Gillard, the director of the show is W-Darren
Star and the producer is P-Jo Anne McCool.
90210 is an American teen drama television
series that aired on The CW from September 2,
2008 to May 13, 2013. Set in Beverly Hills 90210 is
shown on E4, on Tuesday nights at 9pm, this is an
American drama series. 90210 could be seen as
a soap opera or a Sitcom But I think it would go
under soap opera because it is based around
every day ‘real life’ situations. It has been also
put on netflix and 4OD.
4. The target audience for 90210 would be young people. This is
because the characters in 90210 are in college. Mainly for young girls
because most of the characters are female and they play huge roles
such as gossiping or experience drama with friends.
There are 5 seasons in 90210.
5. 90201 has gone a number of topics
since their first episode in 2008. The
topics range from:
bullying
pregnancy
adoption
dating
divorces
coming out gay
getting into and getting reject from
college
cancer
death
fame
6. In 90210, we can generally see the characters
‘do’ and conform to their respective genders in
terms of appearance, dressing and
behaviour. Firstly, in terms of appearances, there
is a tendency for main female characters (Naomi,
Annie, Silver, and Adrianna) to be slim and with
long hair. The female characters look the same; in
terms of looks and size especially. Thus, we can
say that the female characters in the show were
made to conform and reinforce society’s
expectations of being and looking like an ideal
woman, in terms of her whole physical outlook,
complete with face, body and size. There is also
the sexualisation of women in the show.
•An example to illustrate would be Naomi. Naomi
tends to wear clothes that are figure-hugging
and shows off her cleavage.
•The girls wear dresses above their knees, showing
off their legs with shoes such as sandals or high
heels. If the girls are on the beach they will wear
bikinis showing their bodies.
Women
7. Men
Ethan, Dixon and Navid, are portrayed as very
much involved in sports, competitions and
even video games.
The guys, on the other hand, are portrayed as
good looking and completed with the ‘manly’
short hair, especially the main and popular
characters like Ethan, Dixon, Liam and Navid.
They also care about their appearance for
example wear designer clothes.
All guys are interested in women/men.
Relationships is a goal for them. This is shown
when teddy falls for Silver and is determined to
have her as his. This came down to him
changing some of his ways. E.g. Becoming
loyal
Making money and succeeding Is something
that Is shown to drive each and one of the
guys. This is shown when Liam accidently buys a
bar, which he then is determined to make it a
success.
Friendship is strongly represented amongst the
guys. Arguments and problems arise
throughout the show however they all manage
to find their way back. This is shown when the
guys find it difficult accepting Teddy’s new
change of being gay.
8. Another aspect we noted was the
importance of the father’s involvement in
the upbringing of a child. The show
brought in the complex relationship
between characters Liam, his half-brother
Charlie and their father. This questions the
pervasiveness and relevance of the
notion of the ‘absent’ father. In addition,
it represents a rise in fathers’ status and
degree of involvement in child rearing in
modern society.
Parenthood
•-Something we notice about the show is that
whilst characters like Naomi are more wealthy and
perhaps live more of a lavish lifestyle, we see that in
fact they are unhappy and lack family life. Naomi's
mother Tracy is hardly around and throughout the
programme we notice she has on-going issues with
her older sister Jen. This contrasts to the happy,
family orientated lives that Dixon and Annie live
whilst they are not as rich as the rest. However, as
the series goes on and both Dixon and Annie
become wealthier we see there family life
deteriorate and their father Harry leaves them,
demonstrating to the audience that whilst It seems
the characters have money and fancy things they
are actually unhappy.
9. However, the fact that divorce is portrayed as frequent in the show suggests
that female and male characters are able to leave the marriage more easily.
This is because female and male characters have access to resources, showing
no necessary need to be inter-dependent. Female characters like Naomi show
that females in the society within ‘90210’ are capable of having careers to have
access to resources, just like most of the male characters. The female characters
are not oppressed, but they are not completely empowered either.
Divorce
10. American teen drama is set in California as in 90210 they all live in a society where they
are either rich or comfortable enough that they can get the latest designer clothes and
expensive cars and their parents are someone famous or equivalent to that status in
society.
In all American teen dramas ideologies are constructed in a way that their teenage
target audience can identify themselves with. Most American teen dramas acknowledge
their teenage target audience my constructing ideologies that can offer them escapism,
sexual gratifications or personal identification, all of which essentially appeal to the
audiences; because many teenagers and young adults want these luxury things.
The audience receive this with the all-important entertainment value- that’s why
American teen dramas can be very successful. American teen dramas construct
ideologies such as sex before marriage, anti-racism and superficiality. However American
teen dramas can also be responsible for constructing negative ideologies as well as
positive ideologies of youth, which can shape the overall ideology of youth in society as a
whole.
California
11. 90210’s ideology of anti-racism is presented through the
character of Dixon, an Afro-American teenager. Dixon is
adopted by nuclear family and attends West Beverly Hills High.
He is accepted by everyone and has many friends, who are all
well aware of his adoption. The fact that a rich ideal white family
- that seem to represent the dominant ideology of a family, has
adopted a black child is a perfect way to promote the ideology
of anti-racism into society. 90210 is injecting the ideology of anti-
racism into the target audience and therefore society through
the character of Dixon and his family.
•Whilst Dixon is accepted by everybody, we do notice that there
are stereotypes of Black people presented through his
character.
•For example; often it is black males that are shown to
stereotypically ‘rap’ and Dixon meets this stereotype as
throughout the series we see him working on his music.
•Dixon also becomes a drug addict again a stereotypical
representation of black males in both TV series and films.
•In one series Dixon is also arrested for vandalism of a sorority
house linking in the idea of black people and the stereotype of
them being suspects of crime.
Dixon
12. Navid is another character from 90210
which represents the ideology of anti-
racism. Navid lives with his wealthy Persian
family and is one of the characters from the
main cast who also has many friends, a
girlfriend and runs the school newscast. So
in terms of his status in school he is well
known and socioeconomically is in a high
class. There doesn’t seem to be any racism
against Navid or Dixon. In fact there
doesn’t seem to be any racism within the
entire show on whole, which constructs the
ideology of anti-racism and that race isn’t
an issue. This Ideology has been
constructed for the obvious reason that the
show is trying to appeal to a wide range of
ethnicities and this creates a positive image
for show.
Navid
13. WOMEN: to a certain extent , in 90210, the women are presented as
strong, independent and confident through the way they dress, act and
look. All Naomi, Annie, Adriana and Silver are shown as fashionable,
attractive women who appear strong yet through the backstories of all
the characters we are aware of their vulnerability and insecurities.
Naomi, after being raped finds it hard to trust people and goes through
a rough senseless patch in her final years at high school. In addition to
this, Adrianna is left lonely and friendless following her betrayal of Sliver.
MEN: in 90210 men are represented as masculine and attractive who
are into their looks and presentation of themselves like the women. This is
relatable to many males especially of the age group of the characters in
90210.
14. In the series 90210, we are presented with issues in which some audience members will react
positively whilst some react negatively.
DOMINANT READING:( PREFFERED AUDIENCE): in terms of the dominant readers, general college
students would like a text such as this because of the fact they can relate to issues such as
relationships or the characters themselves however, the lavish lifestyle these characters live could
create and escapism for people of a similar age to those in the series because of what they
have.
NEGOTIATED READING: Older audiences may like this text as it could remind them of their past in
college and make them nostalgic however, the representation of some of the older characters
like Tabitha, Debby's picky mother in law and Dixon and Annie's grandma could cause them to
disagree with this text.
Women: the fashionable, high lifestyle they live could be preferred by the audiences however,
some of the issues regarding the women e.g. Adrianna changing her friends pills or Naomi lying
about a teacher assaulting her could be something they disagree with.
Similar to males, their freedom and masculinity could be seen as something the audience prefer
yet the way certain males are presented in the film could cause them to disagree with the text
e.g Max leaving Naomi, Dixon being on drugs, Jasper stalking Annie.
OPPOSITIONAL READING:
Teachers: the teachers have a bad presentation in the drama.
Mr cannon rapes Naomi.
Harry the headmaster abandons his family
Australians: Oscar an boy from Australia is presented as a cheat and scammer
Mr cannon is also Australian.
15. Social Impact: This show mostly effect young teens in high school dealing things like
pregnancy, drugs, abuse and relationship struggles with boyfriends/girlfriends, friends
and family. There are a bunch of broad topics that almost every viewer can relate to.
Escapism: The viewers may see this show as a chance to act like the character and want
to live the lives that they do because all the people on the show granted a lot of
opportunities.
The media product affects us in our society by showing the way people live in certain
setting like the 90210 which is Beverly Hills California. These people live in a more
glamour settings.
Entertainment: 90210 is a media product serves as entrainment to people who like
drama filled show and real like problems and showing how people with certain
personalities, families and place live effect way they deal with every going on in their
lives.
