Memory
• In computing, memory refers to the computer
hardware devices used to store information
for immediate use in a computer.
• There are two types of memories:
Short-term memory
Long-term memory
Memory types
• SHORT-TERM MEMORY: This short-term
memory disappears when the computer is
turned off .
• Ex :RAM:- RAM is your system's short-term
memory. Whenever your computer performs
calculations, it temporarily stores the data in
the RAM until it is needed.
Memory types
• LONG-TERM MEMORY: This long-term memory
doesn’t disappears when the computer is turned off.
• It is a system for permanently storing, managing, and
retrieving information for later use.
• Ex: HARDDRIVE,CD

Working memory
• Working memory:
• Random access memory (RAM) is used as
the working memory of a computer system. It
stores input data, intermediate results,
programs, and other information temporarily.
It can be read and/or written. It is usually
volatile, that is all data will be lost when the
power is turned off.
RAM
• RAM stands for Random Access Memory
• RAM is your system's short-term memory.
Whenever your computer performs calculations, it
temporarily stores the data in the RAM until it is
needed.
• RAM is volatile memory.
• A random-access memory device allows data items
to be accessed (read or written) in almost the same
amount of time irrespective of the physical location
of data inside the memory.
RAM ROLE IN COMPUTER
PERFORMANCE
• RAM is measured in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB).
The more RAM you have, the more things your computer can
do at the same time. If you don't have enough RAM, you may
notice that your computer is sluggish when you have several
programs open. Because of this, many people add extra
RAM to their computers to improve performance.

Swapping Technique
• Swapping is a useful technique that enables
a computer to execute programs and manipulate
data files larger than main memory(RAM).
• The operating system copies as much data as possible
into main memory, and leaves the rest on the disk
• When the operating system needs data from the disk, it
exchanges a portion of data (called a page or segment) in
main memory with a portion of data on the disk.
• This is also known as paging.

IF Working Memory is low then
swapping space is used
Conclusion
• Swapping Technique is used in most of the
operating systems, including OS/2, Windows,
and UNIX, do.
• So, the effective utilization of working
memory makes the computer work faster.
