2. SOIL POLLUTION :
With the rise of concrete
buildings and roads, one part of
the Earth that we rarely see is
the soil.
The plants that feed us grow in
soil and keeping it healthy is
essential to maintaining a
beautiful planet.
Soil also suffers from pollution.
The pollution of soil is a
common thing these days.
The degradation of soil is
called soil pollution.
4. INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES :
Industrial waste not properly
disposed lingers in the soil surface for a long
time and makes it unsuitable for use.
Industrial wastes include the ores like
iron,aluminium,lead and different minerals
like coal.
5. DEFORESTATION AND SOIL EROSION :
Land that is once converted into a dry or barren
land, can never be made fertile again.
In search of more land, potent land is hunted and its
indigenous state is compromised with.
6. AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES :
Farmers often use highly toxic fertilizers and
pesticides to get rid off insects, fungi and
bacteria from their crops.
Overuse of these chemicals result in
contamination and poisoning of soil.
7. WASTE DISPOSAL OR SEWAGE TREATMENT :
There is also a large amount of waste
that is dumped directly into landfills in
the form of diapers.
Large amount of solid waste is leftover
once the sewage has been treated. The
leftover material is sent to landfill site
which end up in polluting the soil.
8. ACID RAIN :
Acid rain is caused when pollutants
present in the air mixes up with the rain
and fall back on the ground.
This polluted water could dissolve
away some of the important nutrients
found in soil and change the structure
of the soil.
9. CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES :
Due to urbanization, large amount of construction
activities are taking place .
They result in large waste articles like wood,
metal, bricks, plastic .
MINING ACTIVITIES :
During extraction and mining activities,
several land spaces are created beneath the
surface .
Land caving in occurs; this nature’s way of
filling the spaces left out after mining .
10. NUCLEAR WASTES :
Left over radioactive material contains harmful and
toxic chemicals that can affect human health.
They are dumped beneath the earth to avoid any
casualty.
ACCIDENTAL OIL SPILLS :
Chemicals in the fuel deteriorates the quality
of soil and make them unsuitable for
cultivation .
These chemicals can enter into the
groundwater through soil and make the water
undrinkable.
11. EFFECTS :
SOIL DEGRADATION
CHANGE IN CLIMATE PATTERNS
EFFECT ON HUMAN HEALTH
EFFECT ON WILDLIFE
AIRPOLLUTION
EFFECTS TOURISM
BIO ACCUMULATION
12. SOIL DEGRADATION :
Loss of fertile land for agriculture, forest
cover, fodder patches for grazing etc.
Effects all systems of life
13. EFFECT ON HUMAN HEALTH :
Lead to problem of skin cancer and human
respiratory system.
Toxic chemicals can reach our body through foods
and vegetables that we eat as they are grown in
polluted soil.
EFFECT ON WILDLIFE :
Loss of habitat and natural environment .
Species are pushed to the verge of extinction,
due to no homeland.
14. EFFECTS TOURISM :
City looses its attraction as landfills do not look
good when you move around the city.
AIR POLLUTION :
Landfills across the city keep on growing due
to increase in waste and are later burned
which leads to air pollution.
They become home for rodents, mice etc
which in turn transmit diseases.
15. BIO ACCUMULATION :
Bioaccumulation refers to the accumulation of substances, such as pesticides, or other
chemicals in an organism.
Bioaccumulation occurs when an organism absorbs a toxic substance at a rate greater than that
at which the substance is lost.
16. REMEDIES :
Make people aware about the concept of Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.
Reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural activities.
Avoid buying packages items as they will lead to garbage and end up in landfill site.
Ensure that you do not litter on the ground and do proper disposal of garbage.
Buy biodegradable products.
Do Organic gardening and eat organic food that will be grown without the use of pesticides.
Create dumping ground away from residential areas.
