The government has increased the age to which all young people in England must continue in education or training, requiring them to continue until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17 from 2013 and until their 18th birthday from 2015. The New Law on Education & Training for 16 & 17 year olds leaflet tell you all you need to know about the law on education and training for 16-17 year olds and how it is applied and what they can do. Till the age of 17 young people must stay in some sort of education; be that in schools, colleges, full-time work with study on the side or apprenticeships. 1. New Law on education and training for 16- and 17-year olds
How will this affect my child?
If your child is currently in year 11, the law now says that they must stay
in education or training until the end of the school year in which they
turn 17.
Do they have to stay on at school?
No. Your child can study or train in any of the following ways:
• Full-time education in a school, college or training provider.
• Full-time work or volunteering combined with part-time education
or training.
• An Apprenticeship (www.apprenticeships.org.uk)
Could this affect my child benefit payments?
Your child benenfit entitlement will only continue if your child is in fulltime non advanced education or approved training. Please fill in the

Is financial support available for my child?
The 16-19 Bursary Fund supports young people from poorer
backgrounds. This is given out by schools, colleges and training
