At the time, little to no research had been carried out into the factors influencing the poor uptake of apprenticeships from BAME communities.
It was unclear why the BAME community was not engaging with the apprenticeship opportunities.
We did this by specifically, sampling those members of the BAME community who had first-hand experience in the world of apprenticeships.
In doing this, we gained subjective and insightful views of the current apprenticeship scene, which could then be used to inform further engagement with the community.
2015/16, BAME engagements was 170 participants, which was nearly half of our total case load.
Since, engagements has increased by more than 1000% , now at a caseload of 1910 BAME
Achievement rates have consistency been above the National Achievement Rates.
Through a collective and public celebration of their achievements giving credibility and publicity to apprenticeships.
Branded previously as the Asian Apprenticeship Awards
Following our ongoing findings, we found that a wider issue needed to be dealt with, and thus we rebranded and became the BAME Apprenticeship Awards.
Through the engagement with employers and learning providers, the awards brought to the forefront key issues surrounding the need for greater diversity within apprenticeships.
We realised that there was a broader need for racial inclusion within apprenticeships, especially in terms of progression within apprenticeships.
Data indicates a growing demand among the BAME community for apprenticeships in three key subject areas:
Business administration
Health and social care
Retail and commercial enterprises
This accounted for 81% of BAME apprentices compared with 72% of ‘White’ apprentices.
It also highlighted opportunities to improve representation in sectors such as:
Engineering
Construction
Where BAME apprentices are currently underrepresented.
BAME Apprentice Network supports employers in becoming more ethnically diverse, equal, and inclusive.
Alongside the pledge, our team at BAME Apprentice Network provide employers with support through webinars and workshops to gain greater insight into positive practices they can put in place to meet the needs of the pledge.
