INTRODUCTION: -
Madhya Pradesh (Central State), is better known as the 'Heart of India' not only for it's
geographical position but more so for it's unique cultural history and its rich natural
resources. Its argubaly the most diverse amongst all Indian states as it has dense forests,
a scenic platue, ancient temples, hills and lakes and rich wildlife.Amongst the earliest
known dwellings of mankind are found in the pre-historic caves of Bhimbetka. Lovers
of history would appreciate the glimpses from the Stone Age that exist on the rock
shelters of Bhimbetka, where the primitive man depicts an era when "human beings"
were not the dominant species on earth. Madhya Pradesh has inumerable forests and
national parks that hold the richest cover of flora anf fauna in the Indian
Subcontin. What we know of Madhya Pradesh now, was originally Gondwana, one of
the oldest regions of the world. Madhya Pradesh is home to three mountain ranges of
Kaimur, Vindhya and Satpura and the two hill ranges of Maikal and Mahadeo. The
state also boasts of four national parks(forests). and gorges and ravines from six
rivers. The Gonds (A Tribe), amongst the first settlers in Madhya Pradesh, trace their
origin from pre human era. The ancient caves that exist today clearly indicate the
historical presence of tribes such as Kols and Korkus that perhaps founded the Indian
civilisation. No other Indian state has a richer culture of tribal people with four
established tribes, the largest amongst them being the Bhils and Gonds. Madhya
Pradesh is also home to fourteen great dynasties ranging from the Mauryas to the
Mughals. These dynasties have left a mark on the architecture resulting in splendid
monuments, each a distinct reminder of a dynasty. The early history of Madhya Pradesh
goes back to 320 BC. The Satavahana dynasty of the Deccan ruled the region in
between 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Ujjain became the predominant commercial center
of western India during the ancient period. Between the 12th and 16th centuries, the
region saw continuing struggles between Hindu and Muslims rulers or invaders.
Important independent regional kingdoms included Tomara Rajput kingdom of
Gwalior and the Muslim Sultanate of Malwa, with its capital at Mandu. From 950 to
1050AD the Paramaras of Malwa and the Chandelas of Bundelkhand constructed the
fantastic series of temples at Khajuraho in the north of the state. The early history of
Madhya Pradesh goes back to when Chandragupta Maurya established the Mauryan
Empire which included many places of modern day Madhya Pradesh. Ashoka, the great
Mauryan emperor was powerful in the plateau of Malwa. With the death of Ashoka, the
Mauryan Empire became weak and the region came under the rule of Sakas, Kushanas,
and local dynasties. Towards the end of 4th century the region came under Gupta
dynasty and it continued for be so for over 150 years and finally collapsed towards the
end of the 5th century. Ujjain became the predominant commercial center of western
India during the ancient period. The glorious cultural and geographical history is there
to be witnessed even today. The forests, the mountain ranges, the temples and
monuments, the caves and rock shelters, the holy towns, it's all there in the very Heart
of India, Madhya Pradesh.
BHOPAL
HISTORY:- According to folklore, Bhopal was founded in 11th century by the
Paramaraking Bhoja, who ruled from his capital at Dhar. This theory states that Bhopal
was originally known as Bhojpal after a dam (pal) constructed by the king's
minister.]
No archaeological evidence, inscriptions or historical texts support the claim
about an earlier settlement founded by Bhoja at the same place, although the
Bhojeshwar Temple ascribed to him exists at Bhojpur, which is 28 km from Bhopal.
An alternative theory says that the city is named after another king called Bhupala (or
Bhupal).
Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is called the ‘City of Lakes’ and rightly so. It
has an amazing number of natural lakes and artificial lakes. The city is a blend of
history, mesmerizing beauty and modernized planning. Here are the leading

4. Khajuraho:-
HISTORY:- The Khajuraho group of monuments was built during the rule of the
Chandeladynasty. The building activity started almost immediately after the rise of
their power, throughout their kingdom to be later known as Bundelkhand. Most
temples were built during the reigns of the Hindu kings Yashovarman and Dhanga.
Yashovarman's legacy is best exhibited by The Lakshmana Temple. Vishvanatha
temple best highlights King Dhanga's reign. The largest and currently most famous
surviving temple is Kandariya Mahadeva built in the reign of King Vidyadhara The
temple inscriptions suggest many of the currently surviving temples were complete
between 970 and 1030 CE, with further temples completed during the following
decades. The Khajuraho temples were built about 35 miles from the medieval city of
Mahoba, the capital of the Chandela dynasty, in the Kalinjar region. In ancient and
medieval literature, their kingdom has been referred to as Jijhoti, Jejahoti, Chih-chi-to
and Jejakabhukti. One cannot help but think of Khajuraho sculptures the moment the
name of the place is heard. The exquisite carvings are proof of the immortal
architecture of the land. A perfect example of Indo-Aryan architecture, the sculptures
stand the test of time. Here are the leading destinations in Khajuraho.

HISTORY:- Excavations at Kayatha (around 26 km from Ujjain) have revealed
chalcolithicagricultural settlements dating to around 2000 BCE.Chalcolithic sites have
also been discovered at other areas around Ujjain, including Nagda, but excavations at
Ujjain itself have not revealed any chalcolithic settlements. Archaeologist H. D.
Sankalia theorized that the chalcolithic settlements at Ujjain were probably destroyed
by the Iron Age settlers.
According to Hermann Kulke and Dietmar Rothermund, Avanti, whose capital was
Ujjain, "was one of the earliest outposts in central India" and showed signs of early
incipient urbanisation around 700 BCE.Around 600 BCE, Ujjain emerged as the
political, commercial and cultural centre of Malwa plateau.
Ujjain is considered one among the seven important Hindi pilgrim centers to attain

LIST OF RIVER OF MADHYA PRADESH

The Narmada originates in Amarkantak, the highest peak of the satpura range, it flows
westward through Madhya Pradesh including hoshangabad and Gujarat before finally
ending its journey in the Gulf of Khambat. Its tributaries include the Banjar, the Tawa,
the Machna, the Shakkar, the Karam, the Kaveri, the Choral, the Barna, the Hiran, the
Denwa and the Sonbhadra rivers. Its length is 1312 kilometers, out of which 1077 km

Kalidasa, the 4th century poet, writes about the Narmada in his love poem, Meghdoota,
which is about a yaksha (tree spirit) who was banished to Madhya Pradesh. The yaksha
sent messages to his beloved in the Himalayas through the clouds.
Betwa:-
The Betwa drains off of the Deccan plateau. Originating in the Kumra village in Raisen
district of Madhya Pradesh, the Betwa flows for 590km (232km in MP and 358km in
UP). After meandering through Madhya Pradesh, it enters the neighbouring state, Uttar
Pradesh, and joins the river Yamuna (Jamna) in Hamirpur. The Betwa takes along with
it the waters of the eastern Malwa plateau. The tributaries of the Betwa include the
Bina, Yamini, Dhasan and Ken.In ancient times, the Betwa was known as Vetrawati.
Chambal:-
The Chambal originates from the Janapav Near Mhow Mountain in the Vindhya
Range, and flows northeast through Ujjain, Ratlam and Mandsaur, before entering
Rajasthan. It reenters Madhya Pradesh after meandering through parts of Rajasthan and
touches Morena and Bhind. Here are the infamous Chambal Ravines that have been
and still are the safest refuge for dacoits.
Shipra:-
The Shipra starts her journey in the Vindhya Range from a hill called Kokri
Tekdi situated at a distance of 11km from Ujjain. This river is 195km long, out
of which 93km flow through Ujjain. It then touches Ratlam and Mandsaur,
before joining the river Chambal in Gwalior . The main tributaries of the Shipra
are the Khan and the Gambhir.
Famous Personalities of M.P
1.)Freedem Fighter Chandra Shekar Azad:- Azad was bom as Chandrashekhar
Tiwari on 23 July 1906 in Bhavra village, in the present-day Alirajpur district of
Madhya Pradesh. His forefathers were from Badarka village near Kanpur (in present-
day Unnao District). His mother, Jagrani Devi Tiwari, was the third wife of Sitaram
Tiwari, whose previous wives had died young. After the birth of their first son,
Sukhdev Tiwari, in Badarka, the family moved to Alirajpur State
2.) Lata Mangeshkar:-
Lata Mangeshkar was born in a Marathi speaking Gomantak Maratha family to a
Maharashtrian father and a Gujarati mother in the princely state of Indore, part of the
Central India Agency (now part of Madhya Pradesh). Her father, Pandit Deenanath
Mangeshkar, was a classical singer and theatre actor. Her mother Shevanti (later
renamed Shudhamati), a Gujarati woman from Thalner, Bombay Presidency (now in
northwest Maharashtra) was Deenanath's second wife; his first wife Narmada was
Shevanti's older sister, but she died early. Lata's maternal grandfather was a Gujarati
businessman Sheth Haridas Ramdas Lad, the most prosperous businessman and
landlord of Thalner, and Lata learnt Gujarati folk songs such as garbas of Pavagadh
from her maternal grandmother. The family's last name used to be Hardikar; Deenanath
changed it to Mangeshkar in order to identify his family with his native town,
Mangeshi in Goa. Lata was named "Hema" at her birth. Her parents later renamed her
Lata after a female character, Latika, in one of her father's plays, BhaawBandhan. Lata
is the eldest child of her parents. Meena, Asha, Ushaand Hridaynath are her siblings in
sequence.

underwent his schooling in Scindia School, Gwalior and thereafter went for higher
studies in Winchester College and at New College, Oxford. On his return from the UK,
Scindia followed the political tradition set by his mother Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia
by joining politics. He was elected to the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian
parliament) in 1971 from Gwalior. After Indian independence in 1947, the former
princely state of Gwalior acceded to the Union of India and became part of the new
state of Madhya Bharat, which in 1956 was merged into Madhya Pradesh
Tribals in Madhya Pradesh
There are 46 recognized Scheduled Tribes in Madhya Pradesh, India, three of which
have been identified as 'Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PTGs)(formerly known
as 'Special Primitive Tribal Groups'). The population of Scheduled Tribals (ST) is
21.1% of the state population (15.31 million out of 72.62 million), according to the
2011 census. Bounded by the Narmada River to the north and the Godavari River to
the southeast, tribal peoples occupy the slopes of the region's mountains. The term
"Scheduled Tribes" refers to specific indigenous peoples whose status is acknowledged
to by the Constitution of India. The term Adivasi also applies to indigenous peoples of
this area.
DANCE OF M.P
• When rabi crops sway in the fields in the full bloom, the parties from different
villages join together and perform the Grida dance. It continues from morning till
evening. The host village returns the visit next year by going to the village of their
guests of the preceding year. The dance has three distinct phases: (1) Sela - The
feet movements are slow and comparatively rigid. (2) Selalarki - The feet
movements become brisker and faster. (3) Selabhadoni - With the acceleration of
the tempo, every limb of the body begins to sway in mood of exaltation.
• Maanch is a lyrical folk drama and a form of operatic ballet that is very popular in
Malwa in Madhya Pradesh. "Maanch" means the stage or place of performance and
as an indigenous and distinct folk-form.
• The tableland of Malwa has comparatively very few dances. On wedding
occasions, the countryside women of this part perform the Matki dance with an
earthen pot balanced on the head, the Matki is mostly danced solo. Sometimes just
for merriment a couple of women join the main dancer who usually dances with a
veil on her face. The two other variations of the Matki are the Aada and Khada
Nach.
• The Phulpati dance is exclusively for semi-rural unmarried girls. The agriculturist
class of Malwa is not very much inclined to any dance by nature but during the
Holi festival revelers perform this to the uneven manipulation of drums.
• The Kamar tribe performs the Tertali, which is an elaborate ritual with many
elements of dance. It is generally performed by two or three women who sit on the
ground. Manjiras,or small metal cymbals are tied to different parts of the body,
mostly the legs, and with a cymbal in either hand the dancer strikes these in rhythm.
The head is covered with a veil, and at times a small sword is clenched between the
teeth and an ornamental pot balanced on the head.

  • 2. INTRODUCTION: - Madhya Pradesh (Central State), is better known as the 'Heart of India' not only for it's geographical position but more so for it's unique cultural history and its rich natural resources. Its argubaly the most diverse amongst all Indian states as it has dense forests, a scenic platue, ancient temples, hills and lakes and rich wildlife.Amongst the earliest known dwellings of mankind are found in the pre-historic caves of Bhimbetka. Lovers of history would appreciate the glimpses from the Stone Age that exist on the rock shelters of Bhimbetka, where the primitive man depicts an era when "human beings" were not the dominant species on earth. Madhya Pradesh has inumerable forests and national parks that hold the richest cover of flora anf fauna in the Indian Subcontin. What we know of Madhya Pradesh now, was originally Gondwana, one of the oldest regions of the world. Madhya Pradesh is home to three mountain ranges of Kaimur, Vindhya and Satpura and the two hill ranges of Maikal and Mahadeo. The state also boasts of four national parks(forests). and gorges and ravines from six rivers. The Gonds (A Tribe), amongst the first settlers in Madhya Pradesh, trace their origin from pre human era. The ancient caves that exist today clearly indicate the historical presence of tribes such as Kols and Korkus that perhaps founded the Indian civilisation. No other Indian state has a richer culture of tribal people with four established tribes, the largest amongst them being the Bhils and Gonds. Madhya Pradesh is also home to fourteen great dynasties ranging from the Mauryas to the Mughals. These dynasties have left a mark on the architecture resulting in splendid monuments, each a distinct reminder of a dynasty. The early history of Madhya Pradesh goes back to 320 BC. The Satavahana dynasty of the Deccan ruled the region in between 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Ujjain became the predominant commercial center of western India during the ancient period. Between the 12th and 16th centuries, the region saw continuing struggles between Hindu and Muslims rulers or invaders. Important independent regional kingdoms included Tomara Rajput kingdom of Gwalior and the Muslim Sultanate of Malwa, with its capital at Mandu. From 950 to 1050AD the Paramaras of Malwa and the Chandelas of Bundelkhand constructed the fantastic series of temples at Khajuraho in the north of the state. The early history of Madhya Pradesh goes back to when Chandragupta Maurya established the Mauryan Empire which included many places of modern day Madhya Pradesh. Ashoka, the great Mauryan emperor was powerful in the plateau of Malwa. With the death of Ashoka, the Mauryan Empire became weak and the region came under the rule of Sakas, Kushanas, and local dynasties. Towards the end of 4th century the region came under Gupta dynasty and it continued for be so for over 150 years and finally collapsed towards the end of the 5th century. Ujjain became the predominant commercial center of western India during the ancient period. The glorious cultural and geographical history is there to be witnessed even today. The forests, the mountain ranges, the temples and monuments, the caves and rock shelters, the holy towns, it's all there in the very Heart of India, Madhya Pradesh.

  • 11. DANCE OF M.P • When rabi crops sway in the fields in the full bloom, the parties from different villages join together and perform the Grida dance. It continues from morning till evening. The host village returns the visit next year by going to the village of their guests of the preceding year. The dance has three distinct phases: (1) Sela - The feet movements are slow and comparatively rigid. (2) Selalarki - The feet movements become brisker and faster. (3) Selabhadoni - With the acceleration of the tempo, every limb of the body begins to sway in mood of exaltation. • Maanch is a lyrical folk drama and a form of operatic ballet that is very popular in Malwa in Madhya Pradesh. "Maanch" means the stage or place of performance and as an indigenous and distinct folk-form. • The tableland of Malwa has comparatively very few dances. On wedding occasions, the countryside women of this part perform the Matki dance with an earthen pot balanced on the head, the Matki is mostly danced solo. Sometimes just for merriment a couple of women join the main dancer who usually dances with a veil on her face. The two other variations of the Matki are the Aada and Khada Nach. • The Phulpati dance is exclusively for semi-rural unmarried girls. The agriculturist class of Malwa is not very much inclined to any dance by nature but during the Holi festival revelers perform this to the uneven manipulation of drums. • The Kamar tribe performs the Tertali, which is an elaborate ritual with many elements of dance. It is generally performed by two or three women who sit on the ground. Manjiras,or small metal cymbals are tied to different parts of the body, mostly the legs, and with a cymbal in either hand the dancer strikes these in rhythm. The head is covered with a veil, and at times a small sword is clenched between the teeth and an ornamental pot balanced on the head.
