1. HOW WOULD YOU IMPORT VIDEO FOOTAGE INTO FINAL CUT
EXPRESS?
In Final Cut Express, I would go to File > Import > Folder. I would then find the
folder with all my footage in and click Choose.
HOW WOULD YOU PREVIEW A CHOSEN CLIP OF IMPORTED VIDEO?
In the browser window in Final Cut Express you can find all of your clips that
you have imported. By double clicking on a clip, you can open it up in the
preview window.
HOW WOULD YOU INSERT A CHOSEN CLIP INTO THE TIMELINE?
From either the preview window or the browser window, all you have to do is
to drag the clip onto the timeline.
HOW WOULD YOU SET IN AND OUT POINTS FOR A PARTICULAR CLIP?
When a clip is selected in the preview window, you can set the IN and OUT
points by pressing “I” for the IN point and “O” for the OUT point.
WHAT IS THE BLADE TOOL USED FOR? WHAT IS ITS HOTKEY
SHORTCUT?
The blade tool is used to split and separate clips. The hotkey is “B”.
HOW WOULD YOU DELETE A CLIP & CLOSE THE GAP ON THE
TIMELINE?
By selecting a clip in the timeline and pressing the backspace key on the
keyboard you can delete a clip. If this creates a gap, select everything on the
right side of the gap in the timeline by clicking on each clip one at a time whilst
holding the CMD key and then slide all of the selected clips to the left to fill the
gap.
WHAT IS THE PEN TOOL USED FOR? WHAT IS ITS HOTKEY
SHORTCUT?
The pen tool is used to mark points on a video or audio clip in which you can
change the opacity/volume of that certain point in the clip without affecting the
entire clip. The hotkey is “P”.
HOW WOULD YOU VISUALLY SHOW YOUR AUDIO IN THE TIMELINE?
In the bottom left hand corner of final cut express there is a button underneath
the timeline that is a little arrow. Click it and select “Show audio waveforms” to
see the audio visually. To show all of the audio clips in the timeline, drag the

2. double black line, which separates the video clips and the audio clips upwards
to reveal more space to see your audio clips.
HOW WOULD YOU CHANGE THE SCALE OF YOUR CANVAS WINDOW
TO 50%?
In the timeline preview window above the timeline to the left, you will see a
drop down menu above the video frame. Click this and select “ Canvas
Windows 50%”.
WHERE IS THE KEYFRAME ICON & WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
The key frame icon is located on the right-hand side on Final Cut around the
middle. It looks like a small diamond shape.
HOW WOULD YOU ZOOM IN CLOSE ON A PARTICULAR CLIP
MANUALLY?
First, set the canvas window to a suitable % so there is room around the video
frame. Drag the corners of the video clip outwards to zoom in on the clip.
HOW WOULD YOU UNLINK A VIDEO CLIP TO ITS AUDIO ON THE
TIMELINE?
You can unlink video clips from their audio by clicking the little green “chain-
link” button in the top right-hand corner of the timeline window.
