- So what were the results?
- specific social media - organization needs general, not platform specific skills (API+social network understanding) Second Life (we’re a part of the digital campus, but why?) RSS…cool, but not for majority of users E-book readers…our content isn’t compatible (unless an iPad is an eBook reader) VPN, etc. LMS/VLE (stats) <40 (fb same period 700) iPhone-specific things “My page” -> rather distribute the functionality to other platforms (student intranet)
- Discovery services I & UBiT2010’s research show that Google is the preferred medium, not GS or OPAC or anything: Google just is the system, it exists and we need to make it work for us. Anything else we do is peripheral, no point in Summon, Primo or similar. JUST_NO_POINT. A case in point:
- Harald Groven (Web developer at the Norwegian Centre for ICT in education) Show of hands: how many people are good at CQL? How many don’t know what it is? How many care about the binding sequence of operators in their OPAC? Focus on the discovery system people actually use. Work with it.
- As part of the work we’ve been doing, we’ve analysed to what extent our resources are available via search in Google, Google Scholar, Bing and Kvasir: - over 350 subscription resources - “availability”: access to paywalled content by searching for resource or keywords in content - most are available directly in these platforms, allowing access to subscription resources without reference to “our” systems. - A one is a resource that does everything exactly as we expect, including opensearch xml - A two is searchable and returns paywall content without requesting login - A three is everything else. Mostly ones and twos Use the list as a tool and change subscriptions/pressure suppliers that don’t understand our needs
- Google doesn’t do everything well, so we need functional small services that fill the gaps Gaps to be filled: restricted content (things you can’t just find on the web) communication — dialogue help people do repetitive tasks quicker raise awareness of new stuff and new ways of doing stuff
- No-one is interested in how good our metadata is, they want the stuff itself (and they want it electronically). Create accessible endpoints that google can index and you’ve done the job. The data you own and the metadata about it needs to be accessible to indexing.
- Metalib databases as a toolbar. NEN-MeSH. Widgets (Netvibes) (SFX) Journals listings (enriched with Norwegian academic level, subject area, holdings, Romeo-colour) Library on mobiles. Getting social media comms into our user-feedback system and back again
