members will get their $5 discount, and then anybody else that registers receives
that $5 discount. That’s a huge hit, and the way the system handles it is beautiful.
I don’t have to do anything - you set it up once, and it works. For that race...it’s
been highly successful because it encourages people to bring their friend, bring
their family. We have people that sign up ten people just because they want them
on their team."

E: Hi, Welcome to the workshop: The Right Team Option for Your Event
My name is…….Emily
My name is…...Sean
E: We are both Account Managers in Richmond VA office.
E: Today we are going to discuss the types of groups and teams that RunSignup offers and why you would want to use these powerful features!
What is a group? - A collection of participants who share a common attribute or goal.
Next Slide: Specifically, we are going to talk about the Group/Teams (for Social and Competitive) Corporate Teams (an invoicing tool), and Fundraiser Teams (donation based attribute groups and why these would be used and when they are useful for your race.
Team Options
Specifically, we are going to talk about the Group/Teams (for Social and Competitive), Fundraiser Teams (groups focused on raising money for charities), and Corporate Teams (an invoicing tool)
From the Race Dashboard menu you can see the links here to get these started.
Groups/Teams - For Social & Competitive Groupings. Keep in mind the words ‘group’ & ‘team’ are often used interchangeably. We also offer a feature to customize the word that participants see.
Fundraiser Teams - Which falls under the Donation/Fundraising tab and can be used as a non-registrant feature.
Corporate Teams - A powerful invoicing tool
Why Social Teams?
“Running could be considered an individual sport or activity, but a Race, is a very social experience.”
Social Teams are great for rallying friends, family, or co-workers to run together.
The social aspect can drive higher registration volume, provide a connection between participants, and increase the overall participant experience of the Race.
Social groups can be created with specific categories around age, gender, costumes, companies, or causes.
This type of team is created for athletes who are both social and success driven.
Often awards are given for a number of different categories to include:
age,
gender,
and average team time.
USAT and USATF are a few examples of organizations with official scoring structure.

Should your race offer a relay?
Relays are great for longer distances for individuals who want to participate but maybe aren’t able to run the whole 26.2 marathon. A relay can help break the distance down to increase registrations.
They can be used to organize Triathlon legs. In conjunction with a question, specifically for group members, each member can specify if they want to Swim, Run, or Bike and select the answer on a unique basis so no group member can duplicate their response.**
It could also be good for Races that are competing to complete the most laps like an obstacle course

Why Corporate Teams?
Corporate teams promote a social, team building and healthy lifestyle element outside the normal work environment.
these types of teams offer no participant management options and no changing/switching/removing
This feature allows corporations to supplement employee registration cost.
The corporate teams feature is actually more of a powerful invoicing and discount tool rather than a social or competitive signup feature. In most cases, teams won't pay till post race.
A rule of thumb, you will want to have at least 25% of participants attending part of a company. Corporate teams is a super-powerful feature, but if you don't need it, it's unnecessary complexity.
Corporate Teams Is one of our more advanced features. (Recap)
We recently completed a 40-minute webinar and I encourage you to view on our youtube channel if you are interested in diving deeper into Corporate Teams
youtube.com/runsignup
Invoicing Tool - One question to ask for Corporate Teams is - Are you ok getting paid after the race?
Pre-Paid Packages - While allowing company coverage for their employees, you can also offer Pre-Paid Packages to the companies when they create a team.
Limitations - Due to the nature of invoice payments, there are limitations around the feature like no Participant Management features.
Why Fundraiser Teams?
A Fundraising team is a group of individuals working together to raise funds for a common cause or goal.
This type of team consists of people who wish to make an impact. The individual can choose to fundraise and not participate in the event itself.
Fundraising teams consist of participants a non-participants of the actual race.
Friendly competition between teams can inspire individuals to reach new fundraising heights, all while having a positive experience for the charity organization of their choice.
Fundraiser Incentives
Force Fundraising - You have the ability to force each registrant to create a fundraiser. There is an option to hide the setup and have it automatically created in the background. (Fundraiser Email?)
Minimum Goals - Forcing minimum goals for a fundraiser or fundraiser team can help communicate expectations and stimulate interaction.
Fundraiser Refunds - You can set threshold goals for fundraisers. Raise a specific amount of money, receive a refund on your registration.
Do you let fundraisers join teams?
We pulled a statistic as food for thought: 30% of participants join teams when they are available. Some ways to encourage people to join teams would be to automate discounts and refunds.
As easy as getting 10 or more members to join a group, all members receive a $10 discount on their registration.
You could simplify that and provide special pricing for anyone who joins a team before a specific date.
This could stimulate more people to share the information with their friends so there is additional incentive to join the race and run with friends!
Another way would be to offer rewards for a group:
Fastest group
Best group costume,
OR largest group could receive something in turn for winning.
What’s the difference in the features?
We reviewed the ‘Why’ and their benefits and wanted to recap the 3 Teams.
Groups/Teams is best as a social, competitive, or organization features like a relay.
Fundraiser Teams takes individual fundraisers and points them all toward one Fundraiser Team to keep track of donations as a group.
Corporate Teams is a powerful invoicing tool that allows companies to manage discounts and members, purchase registrations in advance, and pay by invoice at a later date
Do Teams register together or separately?
There are a few ways of registering for a team depending on the preference of the race director and the settings they put into place.
Teams can register separately or together as a team.
If they register together, one participant will need to fill out all team members information in order to complete the transaction.
If they register individually, the first member of the team will create the team and it will appear as a team option when others register separately.
This gives each participant the opportunity to fill out their personal information and sign their own waiver.
30% of participants join teams when they are available
Maximize participation - by providing special pricing for anyone who joins a team.
Social Sharing options-Include them in your social media posts, confirmation emails, and on your website. Promote any rewards!
Turn on automated registration follow-up emails
Automated Discounts/Refunds - You can set these up so that if a group reaches a specific number of members, all the members receive a discount or refund on their registration.
Rewards + Awards - Creating categories for ranking can help stimulate registrations.
You can offer benefits to the fastest group, best group costume, or the largest group.
Some examples of rewards that races have given are a free tent, private porta-potty, exclusive swag, etc).
Here is a picture of me and my wife Liesel and our two friends Caroline and Chris.
Caroline wanted to enter in a team costume competition but needed more than 2 people to qualify.
She reached out to Liesel, who is not a runner, but could totally get behind costume creation.
In turn, Liesel ran her first 10K, and the Race got two more registrants that were not planning to attend that year’s Race.
Unfortunately the minions did not make it into the winner’s circle, but first prize for this costume competition was $500, so you can understand the incentive to participant.
