This document summarizes the features and requirements of hospital lifts. Hospital lifts must have spacious and durable cars to accommodate stretchers and wheelchairs. They require smooth and comfortable travel with accurate stopping and emergency controls for patient safety. Dimensions and lift capacities are specified according to Indian standards. 3. What is a Hospital lift?
The Vertical transportation system for modern hospitals
have special requirements such as spacious & durable
car, smooth & comfortable travel, accurate stop with
emergency control features and above all, reliability
with safety. The car dimensions are as per the Indian
Standard requirements for Hospital lifts.

5. • Main features of these lifts are used for hospital
purpose, modified as per client specifications, the best
possible performance, and smooth operation. These
stretcher lifts are mostly employed in hospitals &
nursing homes.

The total headroom has been calculated on the basis of a car height of 2.2
m.
In case of manually- operated doors, clear entrance will be reduced by the
amount of projection of handle on the landing door.
Although 15 persons capacity lift is not a standard one, this is included to
cover lifts of smaller capacity which can be used in small hospitals.

8. Case Study
• The project was for the replacement of one bed lift (M) and one
passenger lift (P) at Preston Acute Hospital NHS Trust.
• Both lifts had an increased capacity with the bed lift fully
complying with the HTM definition and the passenger lift will
increase to the maximum permissible within the existing lift
shaft.
• Lift M is a 2500kg Passenger bed lift with a Traction Gearless
Top Drive (MRL) serving two floors.
• Lift P at Preston Hospital, was installed as part of the same Lift
Contract as a Traction Gearless Top Drive (MRL), in this case
serving 5 floors, 900kg/12 persons capacity.

10. • This included the following site challenges:
a) Priority was to consider how you will protect the public & staff
before you start work.
b) When working on sites or where scaffolding / work at height
equipment is required, ensure that a site specific Risk Assessment
is completed and the public & staff are considered during contract
works.
c) Include and consider the public & staff on all CDM plans and
where applicable risk assessments and method
statements were produced to manage this risk
