FACULTY DEVELPOMENT
CREATIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING
STRATEGIES
OUR FACULTY IS
• Healthiest and wealthiest of
generations to date
• Hard-working
• Passionate (can change the
world)
• Believe in hierarchy – may
find it difficult to adapt to
more flexible arrangements
How Faculty Spend In-Class
Time
Lecturing
• Research has shown that it is
impossible for students to
absorb all of the information
in a lecture (limited short
term memory)
• We need every student to
learn – not just a few
• More effective approach – get
students actively thinking and
learning
Student’s Expectations
• Want solid knowledge base
and real-world applications
• Want clear and organized
presentation of material
• Want to know why (how does
this activity, reading connect
to my future career?)
Student Challenges
• Students feel that teachers have
changed the rules
• Teachers not teaching
• Paying tuition for what?
• Team based learning - some do not
want to work in groups
• Do all members contribute equally?
• Too difficult to schedule, coordinate
• Some dominate, others hide
Faculty’s Challenges
• Time
• Keeping up with their field
• Dealing with students with varied
backgrounds and skill levels
• Fear – stop lecturing & lose control
• Won’t cover all of the material
• Will students do the work?
• Fair assessment of group and team
work
Strategies
• We must understand learners
• Problem-based learning
• Accept differences among
students and between
students and faculty
• Be flexible, creative and try
not to be surprised by
anything that happens in the
classroom!
Teaching Strategies
• Set objectives
• Excite student about the content
• Tie topics together continually
• Pre-assignments in class lectures
and activities
• Opportunity to practice – with
feedback
• Short but realistic examples
• Assessments
Be Flexible
• Check-in
• Are students learning?
• How do you know?
• What could be improved?
Summary
• Can’t satisfy everyone so mix it up!
• Teach to the top
• Use student-centered approaches
• Use effective technology (audience
response, real examples)
• Consider team work, peer-to-peer
exchange
• Stay connected
“What Great Teachers Do
Differently”
“Seven Simple Secrets: What the
Best Teachers Know and Do”
“One of the best-kept
secrets of the very best
teachers is that they
have very few
discipline problems.”
Seven Secrets pg. 98
Expectations
• Establish very clear expectations
• Consistently reinforced
• Don’t focus on “What am I going to do if
students misbehave?” / Focus on the
future
What do we find in the
classrooms of the most
effective teachers?
Summary: Procedures
are taught and
practiced and then
practiced some more.
Great Teachers
• Don’t yell
• Don’t use sarcasm
• Don’t degrade student
High Expectations for
themselves
• The variable is not what teachers
expect of students
• The variable – what really matters-
is what teachers expect of
themselves
• The main variable in the classroom
is the teacher – the only behavior
in the classroom that the teacher
can control is their own
Effective Teachers
• Treat students with positive
regard
• Understand the power of
praise
• Looks for opportunities to find
students doing things right
• Authentic (praising for
something that is genuine)
• Immediate Response
ACTIVITY
• How could you use
information like this in your
school?
• Think to yourself and then
we’ll share ideas
