1. Audience Research Evaluation
Key Findings-I have done a variety of different audience research to discover how I can use
conventions of the comedy genre and tailor it to the needs of my audience. I discovered
many mass conventions of my audience and then some of the audience added some more
niche comments about the genre and their favourite parts. Some of the key findings from
the audience research were:
Predominantly male target audience. The audience was mainly male who were more
eager to comment on the range of different characters especially when fronted with
an inbetweeners trailer, which they discussed the generic ‘lad’ themed holidays and
group.
Youthful target audience. The main focus of my trailer should be towards the
younger generation such as 16-25. Although there will be some who break this age
group the majority will be around this age due to the younger themed jokes in most
comedy films plus the ability to have more time to watch these films.
Narrative has to be effective and linked with comedy. When performing interviews
with my focus group some discussed the need for a good storyline that is tied to
some strong comedic values. This shows that the audience wants some kind of
structure to the trailer but mainly wants to see a string of comedic scenes.
The more popular comedy films featured likeable characters. Many of the audience
when prompted on their favourite comedy films like films such as 22 jump street or
the inbetweeners movie. They also commented that they liked the characters is in
the trailer as they were easy to connect with and enjoy. This shows how in my trailer
I need to create effective and personal characters that the audience can connect
with.
Overall the audience wanted many conventional features that I expected to see and some of
these could apply any genre of film. Having a male and youthful target audience didn’t
surprise me and this gives me and idea of how I can tailor to the male audience using more
masculine humour.
