USING SHARED READING WITH YEAR ONE
               STUDENTS.

Story : The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
        By; Eric Carle
Age group: 7 years old
Duration of the lesson: 3 X 60 minutes
Methodology: Story based approach
WHAT IS SHARED READING ?
Shared reading is an interactive reading
  experience that occurs when students
  join in or share the reading of a book/ big
  book while guided and supported by a
  teacher or experienced reader.
It is an enjoyable cooperate reading
  activity where children participate in
 reading, learn critical concepts of how
print works, get the feel of learning and
begin to perceive themselves as readers.
         (Fountess & Pinnell,1996)
STORY BOOKS IN THE CLASSROOM
Why use story books..?
• Students can have the experience and
  opportunity to explore a high level text.
• Students can experience a creative and artistic
  learning environment.
• Pictures/ illustration in the book can help the
  students take meaning from the text.
• Students can have the opportunity to talk
  about the story and make prediction.
* The teacher can give students the
  opportunity to practice in Wh Question
                    orally.
 * It creates a fun and enjoyable lesson to
achieved the student’s needs in the lesson.
How to Conduct Shared Reading?
a) Introduce the story
- discuss the title, cover, author, illustration.
- Ask students to make predictions regarding
  what they story might be about.
 b) Read the story aloud.
- Use appropriate tone, inflection.
- Pause and ask students to make prediction.
- Ask brief questions to check students’
  comprehension level.
How to conduct Shared Reading?
c) Conclude the reading.
- Ask question about the story and relate it to
   the students’ similar experiences
d) Conduct follow up activities related to the
   story.
Shared Reading Process
 * A shared reading session may be conducted in
   many ways depending on the needs of the
   students and the teaching objectives
   determined by the teacher.
* It will be divided into three reading session;
- Before, During and After reading ‘
How to use it;
• individual
• Small groups
• Whole class setting
What are the opportunities in
        Shared Reading..?
* Students able to track print from left to right.
  ( Left right orientation )
• Students able to make prediction.
• Students able to enjoy and participate in
  reading with a high level text supported by a
  teacher or experienced reader.
• Students able to sequence an event of a story.
* Students able to learn Story Elements
( Characters, Setting, beginning, middle,
                  end )
  * Students able to communicate and
        express idea confidently.
 * Students can have the opportunity to
  communicate with the teacher in non
            formal situation.
 * Students have the opportunity to use
    and practice the target language.
HOW THE LESSONBEGINS.
What I Plan to do..
• There are 3 lessons using “The Very Hungry
   Caterpillar” story book by Eric Carle.
• The Objectives from the 3 lessons are;
1) Students enjoy listening to a story in Shared Reading.
2) Students learned Sight Words.
3) Students learned Days of the Week.
4) Students learned about food that the caterpillar ate
   in the story.
5) Students able to sequence an event of a story.
6) Students able to answer Wh-Questions orally.
What are the activities?
Before reading;
- Puzzle
- Students talk about the character
- Talk about the author. Who is the
  author?
- Students talk about the cover,
  pictures,colours..etc
- Story review.

During Reading:
- Read the story aloud. Invite students to listen/
  participate.
- Picture walk.
- Ask brief Questions.
- Make pauses and invite students to make
  prediction.

  to attract student’s attention.

• To relate stories to student’s personal
  experience.
What my students’ have learned

• Sight words/ high frequency words.
• Days of the week
• Food
- Western fruits and food
• The ability to predict
• Cause and effect; the caterpillar ate to much
  and had a stomachache.
