CAUSES
• When it’s overly stretched, it can get tiny tears in its
surface
- This can bring on pain and inflammation

CAUSES
• Can also be caused by certain diseases including:
- reactive arthritis
- ankylosing spondylitis

RISK FACTOR
•Female
•40 to 60 years old
•Obesity

RISK FACTOR
•Flat feet or high arches
•Tight Achilles tendons, or “heel
cords”
•Unusual walk or foot position

RISK FACTOR
•Often wearing of high-heeled
shoes
•Prolong standing each day
•Wearing worn-out shoes/sandals
with thin soles

 stabbing pain in the bottom of the
foot near the heel
 Pain is usually the worst with the
first few steps after awakening
 Pain is triggered by long periods of
standing or when getting up after
sitting
 Pain is usually worse after (not
during) exercise

• Don't wear worn-out athletic shoes
- Replace your old athletic shoes before they
stop supporting and cushioning your feet.
• Change your sport
- Try a low-impact sport, such as swimming
or bicycling, instead of walking or jogging.

If there is no improvement:
- use of Cortisone
- surgery in rare cases

TREATMENT
• Extracorporeal shock wave therapy
- sound waves are directed at the area of heel
pain to stimulate healing
- used for chronic plantar fasciitis that hasn’t
responded to more-conservative treatments

TREATMENT
• Ultrasonic tissue repair
- An ultrasound imaging is used to guide a
needlelike probe into the damaged plantar
fascia tissue
- Using ultrasound energy, the probe tip
vibrates rapidly to break up the damaged
tissue, which is then suctioned out.

TREATMENT
• Surgery
- To detach the plantar fascia from the heel
bone
- an option only when the pain is severe and
other treatments have failed
- done as an open procedure or through a
small incision with local anesthesia.

EXERCISES TO HELP PREVENT PLANTAR
FASCIITIS
• Left:
To strengthen arch
muscles, place a towel
on the floor, grab the
towel with your toes
and pull it toward you.

FASCIITIS
• Top:
While sitting, grasp
your toes and gently
pull them toward you
until you feel a stretch
in the arch of your
foot.

FASCIITIS
• Right:
Stand as shown, with your
back leg straight and heel
down. Move your hips forward
until you feel a stretch in your
calf. Switch legs and repeat.
Hold each stretch for at least
30 seconds — don't bounce —
and do one or two repetitions
two to three times a day.
