The ageing male is prone to develop enlargement of the prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH
The prostate contains numerous small glands which secrete into the urethra, and muscle fibers and connective tissue.
In benign prostatic hyperplasia, all of these elements increase resulting in enlargement
of the prostate gland.
The first changes in BPH involve proliferation of glandular tissue in the area
known as the transitional zone. This is the area immediately surrounding the urethra
New cells are constantly being formed by division. Room has to be made for these new cells by a special process of programmed cell death known as apoptosis, so that in normal health, the number of cells being produced is balanced by the number of cells disappearing through apoptosis.
Impairment of apoptosis is thought to be an important factor in causing benign prostatic hyperplasia
As the prostate enlarges, it compresses and distorts that part of the urethra which passes through it, causing disruption to the normal flow of urine

The cause of prostate cancer is unknown.
The risk for a man whose father had prostate cancer doubles, then doubles again if his brother also had the disease.
The occurrence of prostate cancer among Caucasian American males is 30 times greater than among Chinese males. The incidence of the disease among Afro-American men is twice what it is for American Caucasians.
Research indicates that a diet rich in fatty foods increases the risk of having the disease.

Prostate cancer can kill at any age. Some men as young as 40 are diagnosed with the disease.
There are effective treatments for prostate cancer, but as yet there are no satisfactory cures.
Men are living longer and prostate cancer is diagnosed earlier. Therefore, treatment is being applied while the disease is still localized and most responsive to medical procedures.
Prostate cancer may not give a warning. That's why it is called the silent killer. Often, however, there may be some symptoms that indicate a problem. These should serve as a warning to any man experiencing them.
While some cases of prostate cancer are slow growing, others rapidly multiply and spread to other parts of the body.

Because the prostate is an important organ in both the male urinary and reproductive systems, physically uncomfortable symptoms can impact the function and comfort of either system.
These are the major symptoms which should alert men that there may be a problem. The list is not all-inclusive and is only meant to touch on the more dramatic symptoms.
It is important to remember, however, that the early stages of prostate cancer may not exhibit any signs. That's why early detection tests are so important, even if none of these symptoms are present.

A DRE is a quick way for your doctor to check your prostate. No man looks forward to having it performed. You never get used to the procedure, but it can save your life. Male equivalent to a clinical breast exam from women.
A PSA, by contrast, is a simple blood test to determine whether or not there are cancer cells in your body. Because this test, along with the DRE can help identify multiple prostate health issues, including an enlarged or inflamed prostate, the PSA would have the same importance as a PAP for women – only much less invasive.
Both tests can miss some cancers, so a complete screening includes both. You should insist on having both tests.
A Gallup poll indicated that less than 50% of men with the disease didn't care to learn the full range of treatment options available to them. A Lou Harris poll found that 30% of men never discussed with their physician how various treatment options might affect their lifestype. We men must learn to break out of the barrier of silence that has built up around this epidemic.
There is a wealth of information available, and it is written in an understandable form. You don't need to have medical training. The library or Internet are excellent information resources.
