Midtown Celebrates Independence Day at RMA
Independence Day never fails to bring with it the patriotic fever and the vibrant tricolor flying high in all
educationalandgovernmentinstitutions.ThisyearasIndiacelebratesits67thIndependenceDay,Midtownhad
organised a special awareness jatha by the students of Rotary Midtown Academy. The day's programme started
at 9 a.m. with the hoisting of the National Flag by the chief guest Mr.S.S.Ramesh, lecturer at Shri Ramakrishna
Vidhyashala. President RtnBhanuchandran welcomed the gathering, and as a matter of habit,he also took on
theroleofMCfortheday.Thestudentsperformedafusiondancetoamedleyofpatrioticsongs.Rtn.Dr.Prahlad
introduced the chief guest Mr.S.S.Ramesh, who brought a welcome change in his Independence Day speech.
Rather than the usual talk on struggle for independence and how India gained its freedom from the British
rule,Mr. Ramesh spoke about the present day scenario and how we can build a nation of our dreams. His simple
examples caught the rampant attention of the students and he was successful in conveying his message.
Principal Mrs. VanithaBhat proposed the vote of thanks and the students lined up for the Awareness Jatha. Mr.
Rameshflaggedofftheprocessionledbythevibrantschoolband.
Hundreds of placards depicting slogans on bribe, corruption, child labour, dowry death, inequality and
many other social evils were carried by the students. The school van with an audio system followed the
procession wherein a student enlightened the public through his slogans which were also echoed by the
students in chorus in the procession. Rotarians and Inner wheel members too joined the 1km jatha distributing
small tri-color flags to the children who came to watch the procession, wishing a Happy Independence Day. The
walkathon stopped at two places where the students performed a small skit creating awareness among the
public on social equality. After the band returned to the school campus, president-secretary distributed
laddoos,bunandbananastoallthestudents.
Rather than just inspiring and enlightening those present in the school campus, Midtown went a step
furtheraheadtoalsoenlightenthepubliclivingaroundtheschoolthroughthe“AwarenessJatha”.

Membership development
To be an effective, relevant, and vibrant group within a community, a Rotary club needs to continually admit new
members and retain current ones.Aclub's ability to serve the community is directly related to the strength and size of its
membershipbase.AclubthatstaysactiveencouragesRotarianstoremainconnectedtotheorganization.

that every Rotarian is responsible for inviting new members and keeping clubs active and vibrant. It also stresses that
retention is an essential component of a strong club and membership base. To encourage the sponsorship and retention

Findingmembers:
New members bring important benefits to the club, including an increased capacity to serve the community, future
leadership,diversity,andfreshideas,interests,andenergy.
The club brochure templates are one way to advertise your club to prospective members. These files can be edited to
suit different needs and geographic locations. Once you create your own brochure, you can print it out and keep copies to
distribute to prospective members or the general public at club events. Prospective members can fill out and submit the
accompanying Club Membership Inquiry Form if they're interested in learning more about your club, including its
community service activities. Clubs can use the form to learn more about prospective members and invite them to their
weeklymeetings,projects,orevents.
When you're approached by a prospective member, it is helpful to have a concise speech ready about Rotary and
yourclub'saccomplishments.ReadhowotherRotariansdescribeRotary.

Keepingmembers:
Retaining qualified members is as critical to Rotary's long-term health and success as inducting new ones. Current
members who are dedicated, active, and motivated support the effective functioning of the club and are likely to attract
new Rotarians. Successful retention strategies include educating members and keeping them involved and informed.

Rtn. Manickam sponsored 160 stainless steel glasses (worth Rs.4000/-) under the banner of Rotary Mysore Midtown
to K. Hemmanahalli government school. The school had earlier requested for the glasses to
facilitate “Kshirabhagya Yojane” which provides free milk to students. Chief guest-

elaborated the importance of freedom. He inspired the students to take up farming as it is the

Friendship day with Innerwheel
Midtown never ceases to spring surprises. Last Wednesday was no exception. The
scheduled program was celebration of “Friendship Day” with Innerwheel members
followed by first business meeting of the year. By the time Rotarians assembled, the
venue was already colourful with the presence of Innerwheel
members in large numbers. Gujrathi delicacies dhokla, fafda,

by Innerwheel members, but not before each Rotarian was
tagged with a friendship band. Rotarians enjoyed the
delicaciesandsharedsomelightmoments.
Once President Rtn.Bhanu was thru with his opening
remarks, the Innerwheel members came up with a surprise
act, each of them came up with a unique reason for “Need for
Money”, the act was replete with humour spreading bursts of
laughter among the audience. Few of the punch lines were

hapless husbands. At the end of the act, the moral of the story
was revealed – “Funds for Innerwheel projects”. The gates of the KRS dam have been opened and so did the
pockets of generous Rotarians. Innerwheel pocketed a cool 72k for their community projects in just 15
minutes. A great act and a great response. The delighted innerwheel members left 'almost' satisfied making

Innerwheel news ŸAt the recently held Innerwheel District Assembly “Samaksh”. Past president
Ann.Anuradha Nandakumar was installed as the District ISO for the year 2013-14.
The privileged post is adorned by a Midtowner after a long gap of ten years.
Coincidencidentally the Nandoos seem to take up posts in tandem. The couple became presidents in the same
year (2003-2004) and now they are at the district level during the same period. Congratulations to the
formidablecouple.
ŸAnn.Prabha Prahlad was adjudged as the best Treasurer in Innerwheel

Did you know that
p e o p l e a r e m o r e
interested in the “why” than the “how?”.This
applies strongly to Rotary membership. It's
far less interesting how you became a
Rotarian than why you became, and why you
remain,aRotarian.
I became a Rotarian because of my innate
character to give. I am, by nature, altruistic
and I believe in doing the right thing (even
when no one is looking). In a nut shell, I feel
good when I'm helping others. I remain in
Rotary because I feel good when I'm helping
others.
I also remain in Rotary because of the
connectedness I feel with my fellowRotarians
through service and fellowship. We are
engagedineachother'slivesinandoutsideof
our Rotary meetings. My fellow Rotarians
really care about me and I really care about
them. Outside of family, where else does that
happen? Rotary has become my extended
family and the fact that my family reaches

ExpiringDrugswithExpiringLabels:
Some people, especially elderly, either forget or
don't care enough to look at the expiry date of their
medications, but some chemicals can lose potency
over time and may even become counter productive.
Designers Kanupriya Goel and Gautam Goel propose
a new design for pill blister packs that will display a
message not to take the drugs once enough time
passes.
The material would consist of two layers, with the
top containing the original drug's info label and a
bottom layer with ink that slowly seeps into the top.
After enough time passes, the warning message will
become clear and the patient will immediately know
to get a fresh refill. The Self Expiring, as the design
conceptiscalled,wona2013reddotdesignaward.

Midtown Celebrates Independence Day at RMA Independence Day never fails to bring with it the patriotic fever and the vibrant tricolor flying high in all educationalandgovernmentinstitutions.ThisyearasIndiacelebratesits67thIndependenceDay,Midtownhad organised a special awareness jatha by the students of Rotary Midtown Academy. The day's programme started at 9 a.m. with the hoisting of the National Flag by the chief guest Mr.S.S.Ramesh, lecturer at Shri Ramakrishna Vidhyashala. President RtnBhanuchandran welcomed the gathering, and as a matter of habit,he also took on theroleofMCfortheday.Thestudentsperformedafusiondancetoamedleyofpatrioticsongs.Rtn.Dr.Prahlad introduced the chief guest Mr.S.S.Ramesh, who brought a welcome change in his Independence Day speech. Rather than the usual talk on struggle for independence and how India gained its freedom from the British rule,Mr. Ramesh spoke about the present day scenario and how we can build a nation of our dreams. His simple examples caught the rampant attention of the students and he was successful in conveying his message. Principal Mrs. VanithaBhat proposed the vote of thanks and the students lined up for the Awareness Jatha. Mr. Rameshflaggedofftheprocessionledbythevibrantschoolband. Hundreds of placards depicting slogans on bribe, corruption, child labour, dowry death, inequality and many other social evils were carried by the students. The school van with an audio system followed the procession wherein a student enlightened the public through his slogans which were also echoed by the students in chorus in the procession. Rotarians and Inner wheel members too joined the 1km jatha distributing small tri-color flags to the children who came to watch the procession, wishing a Happy Independence Day. The walkathon stopped at two places where the students performed a small skit creating awareness among the public on social equality. After the band returned to the school campus, president-secretary distributed laddoos, bunandbananastoallthestudents. Rather than just inspiring and enlightening those present in the school campus, Midtown went a step furtheraheadtoalsoenlightenthepubliclivingaroundtheschoolthroughthe“AwarenessJatha”. Kudos, totheorganizingteam. – Ann.Lavanya

It's far less interesting how you became a Rotarian than why you became, and why you remain,aRotarian. I became a Rotarian because of my innate character to give. I am, by nature, altruistic and I believe in doing the right thing (even when no one is looking). In a nut shell, I feel good when I'm helping others. I remain in Rotary because I feel good when I'm helping others. I also remain in Rotary because of the connectedness I feel with my fellowRotarians through service and fellowship. Designers Kanupriya Goel and Gautam Goel propose a new design for pill blister packs that will display a message not to take the drugs once enough time passes. The material would consist of two layers, with the top containing the original drug's info label and a bottom layer with ink that slowly seeps into the top. After enough time passes, the warning message will become clear and the patient will immediately know to get a fresh refill.
