In August 2016, new federal standards for the trucking
industry were released that sought to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions in the United States. The new regulations were
announced in a joint release from the Transportation
Department and Environmental Protection Agency and
mandate that large vehicles – from vans to 18-wheeler trucks
– have to reduce their fuel consumption and carbon
emissions by up to 25 percent over the next 10 years.

3. Emissions
 Although large vehicles and trucks only make up five percent
of traffic on the road, they account for 20 percent of the fuel
use and emissions in the transportation sector. These new
rules hope to reduce those numbers.
While previous regulations added by the Obama
administration have been met with some criticism, these new
regulations have received support from several major
trucking executives and companies. PepsiCo, Inc., Waste
Management, and Wabash National Corp. are just some of
the corporations that worked with the EPA to create these
new rules. Most corporations recognize that there will be
some increase in costs during the transition period to lower
emission vehicles, but after that, the rules may actually help
corporations save money. However, smaller companies are
likely to feel the impact more heavily and owner-operators are
calling for the rules to be more heavily analyzed.
