3. PREFACE
Before you dive into this book, it's inevitable that you’d come across this part first—the part
that says: Thank you so much checking out a sample of my upcoming “best seller!”
Without YOU, my extremely helpful eBook might be sitting on the shelves in the "nobody-
gives-a-hoot-about-me," digital abyss.
So again, I say big thanks for checking out my book, and may you enjoy your decision with a
future full of lush, healthy plants grown under your "homemade" CFL grow light!
In the event you stumbled across this book without much background information about it— or
me—let's go over exactly WHO this manual was created for. After all, it WAS written with
certain "types" of people in mind:
People located in extremely hot or cold climates, who want to grow their own fruits,
vegetables & herbs.
Those with limited outdoor space, with no room to accommodate a garden.
Those who want to grow discreetly and without hassle, from the comfort (and privacy)
of home.
Anyone who likes to eat organic fruits and vegetables but can't afford the hefty prices.
Those who are tired of pesticide-laced, questionably-grown food.
People who are sick and tired of government "regulations" reducing the quality of our
food supply.
Those looking to maintain a garden, but fear that pesky bugs and pests will harm or kill
the crop.
Those interested in sprouting seedlings to transplant into outdoor gardens at a later
date.
4. Anyone desiring to cut plant clones to sell, or to later transplant to outdoor gardens.
Survival aficionados with the knack to prepare far in advance—for the final "Doomsday
Event."
Families with limited indoor space, unable to dedicate an entire room to plant-growing.
Those licensed by their respective state to grow Cannabis for self-medication, per valid
doc's recommendation.
If you don't fit into that list, fear not! Since you are reading, it's for you too...so worry not.
Regardless of your particular situation, you will find this book very helpful and valuable.
This book is presented in sections and is separated by chapters. Each chapter contains the next
series of steps in the process of building your grow light. From the first chapter through the last,
you are given step-by-step instructions, along with illustrations to guide you as you go.
Sorry, the images weren’t taken with a 1,000,000 megapixel super camera. They were taken
“sporadically” using my low-budget NSA recording device…my cell phone!
The pictures aren’t too bad though. You can see what you need to get the job done.
If you have ANY problems at ALL during the process; if you have a question that you can't find
the answer to here, or you'd like to double-check what you're reading to be absolutely,
positively sure, feel free to visit our website at http://www.cfl-grow-light.com for more help!
Now let's get into the meat and potatoes--what you came here for. I'll try to make it as
entertaining as possible, while giving you technical details which are easy-to-follow and easy to
SEE. So grab some coffee and let's head over to the first chapter.
See you there!

6. CHAPTER I
Welcome to the beginning of your professional engineering career!
I’m kidding. Seriously though, it's time to gather your tools. The “fun” really begins now.
Are you the kind of person who likes to fix things around the house? Then you'll probably have
some, if not most of the tools and supplies listed below.
Do you absolutely LOATHE fixing stuff yourself—and you'd rather call your girl or boy-friend,
friend, or associate—or an expensive guy you found online, instead? Then chances are you still
have a few of the items listed below, if not more!
Regardless of who you are, chances are you can round up a few, if not most of these items. So
go ahead and look around. See which items listed below are in your home. I'll wait.
The tools you’ll need:
Phillips screwdriver (medium to large-sized)
Flat screwdriver (small to medium-sized)
Butter knife (that will be heated)
Small steak knife or knife with serrated edges (it will be heated later on)
Sharp scissors
Wire coat hanger, "re-wired" into a "poking" iron (or hot small Phillips screwdriver)
Razor blade, box cutter, X-acto knife, etc
Pliers or socket wrench set
Wire stripping pliers (or scissors that can be heated to strip rubber from wire)
7. The supplies you’ll need:
Black electrical tape [2 rolls]
Black duct tape [1-2 rolls]
Silver/chrome duct tape [3+ rolls]
White masking tape (thin or thick) [1 roll]
Indoor extension cords; 6 ft.+ rated for 660 watts (min.) each $1-2 each [2 cords]
Contact cement tube/container [as needed]
Isopropyl alcohol [1 container]
Household stove (gas only)
Surge protector/power strip rated for 660 Watts+
Rags or towels for cleaning
So now that you’ve took the time to gather your goods, we can move on.
Wait....are there some things you don't yet have? Well, sorry, can't help there. Visit your
nearest hardware store, drug store, grocery store or convenience store and get what you need!
So…now you should have all your tools and supplies to go further.
Let us first gather the parts which matter most: the actual "meat and potatoes" of your grow
light.
What’s that, you ask? I’m referring to your reflector. What I will often refer to as your hood.
The one critical component responsible for how light shines on (or away from) your foliage.
Mess this up, and all your hopes and dreams go up in a puff of unseen CFL smoke. Okay, maybe
I’m exaggerating a bit— but you get the point.
So what do you need to buy and how much will it cost? THAT'S the million dollar question. To
find the answers, let's dive in. Head on over to Chapter II….
