deterrents?
Ballistic and cruise missiles, with their relatively
low operating costs, their potential to penetrate
defence systems, and their value as a symbol of
national power, will continue to be the offensive
weapons of choice for many nations. As such,
they are threats that must be carefully
considered in future military planning and
operations.

A Vignette
A rogue nation ships a container of farm machinery to
Mozambique. The container is trans-shipped to another
country, say PNG. It is then trans-shipped to, say, Chile.
The rogue nation has increasingly bellicose relations with
a superpower friendly to Australia. Reluctant to directly
confront the superpower, the nation decides to use
asymmetric warfare against an ally.
The earlier container transits 1000 km east of Sydney.
The container actually has a conventional SRBM which is
launched towards Sydney, with the target of Martin
Place.

Joint Doctrine for Air and Space Operations – AJP-3.3
Attack
Attack lies at the heart of air power’s capacity to create
influence by changing behaviours or the course of
events. Air attack is coercive in the broadest sense of
the term as it creates tactical, operational and strategic
effects through the threat, and use, of force. The Alliance
uses air-attack capabilities to target adversaries through
strategic attack, counter-surface force operations and
information activities.
Strategic Attack
… offensive action against a target, whether military,
political, economic, or other, that is specifically selected
to achieve military strategic objectives. These attacks
seek to weaken the adversary’s ability or will to engage
in conflict or continue an action and as such, could be
part of a campaign, major operation, or conducted
independently…
KEY ADVANTAGE OF AIR POWER
The ability to strike directly at the heart of the
adversary, disrupting critical leadership
functions, war-sustaining resources and
strategy, while avoiding the need to
sequentially fight through layers of surface
forces to get there.

Offensive Space Control
• Deny, degrade, disrupt, destroy or deceive an
adversary’s space capability or the space support
provided by a third-party to the adversary at a time
and place of own choosing through attacks on the
segments, nodes and links of involved Space systems.
• May be reversible or non-reversible and can be
conducted in all domains.
• Range from kinetic attack on space system ground
segments to electronic attack against satellite uplink or
downlink frequencies.
• Space control operations can result in an immediate
advantage in space capabilities and control of the
space medium.
