2. My media project challenges conventions of
real media products in various ways.We have
followed many conventions of a typical horror
trailer however have also challenged certain
aspects. Our group wanted to create a
modernised version of a previous horror film.
3. The narrative of our project is based on a previous horror film,The Possession (2012).This film
was a modern take onThe Exorcist which was released in the 70’s. For our project we have
used conventions from these films for example our main character is a young girl which
becomes possessed by a doll she’s bought from an old antique shop, like how the young girl in
the possession is possessed from an old box she finds at a garage sale.
4. We decided not to follow costume conventions as we wanted our
project to appear more modern. InThe Possession the costumes
are similar toThe Exorcist, wearing a white nightdress to signify
innocence and vulnerability. In our own, we decided not to follow
this convention instead dressing the child in pink which
highlights the young age of the little girl.
5. We have followed typical conventions of a
horror trailer for the sequence as the build-up
of the trailer is slow however toward the end
the shots become short and fast paced to build
up tension for the target audience (similar to
The Possession trailer).
6. For two scenes during our trailer, we used a torch from an iPhone rather than a light to
ensure the audience were able to see the darkness. We used the flickering effect to create a
frightening effect. I believe we challenged conventions as I have never seen this done
before, this worked effectively in our trailer making the audience fear the child.
7. Our soundtrack challenges existing media
products as I believe it is different to anything
I’ve heard within the horror genre. Our
soundtrack was taken from the film Planet Of
TheApes, which is a science fiction film,
challenging existing trailers as it would not
have been expected in a horror however is the
most significant part of our trailer.
8. Our shot types were typical of the horror genre as we
used various close up shots to show our characters
emotional state as well as establishing shots to show
the eerie setting.
