Learn how to accelerate and
de-risk your cloud migration project
Despite the surge in enterprises migrating applications to the public cloud, more than half of all projects are delayed or over budget and an even greater number are more difficult than expected.1
Cloud Migrations don’t begin when you start moving applications into the cloud. They begin with your application landscape discovery and assessment. The second phase comprises the actual migration where applications are moved to the public cloud. Working with purpose-built enterprise-grade cloud migration platforms, especially those that partner to integrate both phases greatly simplifies and accelerates projects.
RISC Networks and Velostrata have teamed up to deliver this webinar where we’ll share real-world examples, tips, and tricks on crafting a seamless cloud migration from start to completion.

4. Cloud Adoption Paradox—It’s Not About The Cloud!
The New Cloud Reality
Dimensional Research Report
• Surge in cloud migration with 96% migrating but only 4% completion
• More than half of migrations are delayed and over budget
• Almost 2/3 of projects are considered very difficult or failing
“Where cloud projects fail is not so much about the cloud selection
but about picking the wrong workloads to migrate and not paying
attention to security, governance, and other core services. “
David Linthicum, February 2018

15. Application Migration—Phases 1 and 2
Phase 1: Modeling
• Capture server dependencies in an
Automation Runbook
• Optionally document in a CSV file
15
Phase 2: Test Before you migrate
• Test a thin application clone in the cloud
• Non-disruptive to live production
• Fully operational in minutes

16. Application Migration—Phases 3 and 4
Phase 3: Migrate
• Application & data in the cloud within minutes
• Sync back to on-prem as a safety net
• Remaining data migrated in background
• Compute resources on-prem can be repurposed during migration

19. Ensure migration pipeline is always full
• Schedule ahead with application owners on move dates and validations needed.
• Discover and build automation runbooks for each migration batch
• Identify more sensitive applications that may benefit from “Test before migrate”
Network topology and interconnect checks
• Ensure discovered ingress/egress ports open between apps and user network
• Subnet and network security group placements
• Reduce DNS record TTL to 5min, ahead of migration. Will ensure clients are not affected.
Resource Planning, Light Transformation and Tracking
• Decommission obsolete databases and applications
• Plan and implement a tagging strategy. Tags can be specified in the automation runbook.
• Use migration transformation features to remove or update VM tooling and update licenses
• Use assessment & discovery to rationalize and right size your migration, plan cloud quotas.

Efficient, “Right-sized” Migration
Industry: Media
Migration Scale: 11,000+ Servers
Key Takeaway:
“Turner decided it
didn’t need to be in the
datacenter business in
order to be successful”
-Don Browning VP of Cloud Architecture
Turner Broadcasting System
Business Objective
• In the process of transforming
their business to support
digital distribution and
consumption of content.
• Looking to focus on their core
business transformation
instead of maintaining their
on-premises infrastructure
Results & Impact
• Turner realized RISC Networks
was critical in creating an
actionable plan as they did
not know enough about their
existing infrastructure
• Discovered 10% of IT
infrastructure wasn’t being
used and shut down
• Accelerated plan to move
specific applications to AWS

Datacenter Modernization
Industry: Energy & Gas
Migration Scale: 2,100+ Servers
Key Takeaway:
Reduce or eliminate
TCO overhead from
dual infrastructure
maintenance on-prem
& in-cloud with fast
cloud migration
solutions
Business Objective
• Vacate datacenter under tight
timeline to avoid contract
renewal costs
• Enable an agile DevOps
culture with fast proofs-of-
concept and minimum viable
product iterations (MVP) in
weeks and months
Results & Impact
• Completed the migration
project 5x faster than
anticipated.
• Accelerated from 30 VMs per
week to 30 VMs per day.
• IT delivered new services and
became a revenue driver in
months not years

IT Transformation
Industry: Healthcare
Scale: 5,000+ Servers
Key Takeaway:
Build cost-
effective,
repeatable process
across thousands
of workloads
Business Objectives
• Empower IT to transform from
a cost center to a revenue-
generating organization.
• Re-allocate IT time away from
managing on-prem
datacenters towards driving
business.
Results & Impact
• Successfully migrated a
diverse application landscape
(virtual and physical, multiple
OSes, etc.) into the cloud.
• Savings of $2.8M in migration
labor costs. 5+ hours less per
server.
• Allocated saved hours to other
projects.
