1. THE IMPACT OF EXTENSION SERVICE
ON COCOA PRODUCTION IN THE
AMANSIE WEST DISTRICT
BY
AMANKWAAH, RICHARD
Final year presentation
20th NOVEMBER, 2012.
2. CHAPTER ONE : INTRODUCTION
• Background to the study
• In Ghana, cocoa contributes to 14% of GDP.
• 40-50 million people depend upon cocoa for their
livelihood.
• About 90%-95% of all cocoa is produced by small
holder farmers.
Problem statement
• Problems in the cocoa industry have been attributed
to ineffective extension service delivery (Akinnagbe
and Ajayi, 2011).
• Inadequate logistics for change agents.
• Knowledge on the role extension service provides
will help curtail these lapses.
3. RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. What services do extension providers render?
2. What changes have these service providers brought
to the cocoa sector?
3. What gaps are left unattended by these service
providers?
4. How do farmers value these interventions by the
stakeholders?
OBJECTIVES
the main objective is to assess the impact of agricultural
extension service on cocoa production.
4. Specifically, the study will be designed:
1.To find out the services extension providers render.
2. To evaluate changes in production levels due to the
interventions.
3. To assess the effects of these gaps on cocoa
production.
4. To assess farmers perception of interventions by the
stakeholders.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY
1.Ghana achieved 1million tons of cocoa in 2012.
2.Ghana wants to attain MIC status by 2015.
3. Such target cannot be realised if extension service is
not improved (Jarkata,1986).
5. CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHOLOGY
3.1 Sampling procedure
A two stage random sampling technique will be
employed. Random sampling will first be used to
select four communities and then select the cocoa
farmers.
3.2 Research Instruments
Both primary and secondary data will be used. For
primary data, structured questionnaires will be
designed and administered. Secondary data will be
obtained from relevant sources such as COCOBOD
etc
6. 3.3 Data Collection Procedure
Semi- structured and structured interviews will be conducted
to 200 cocoa farmers in the district where the questionnaires
will also be administered personally in Akan whiles English
will be used when necessary.
3.4 METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS
3.4.1 Descriptive Statistics
Descriptive tools like frequencies, percentages, pie-
chart, bar graphs etc will be used.
