Leggenda de “La Bocca della Verità”
“The Mouth of Truth”

2. La Bocca della Verità è una scultura che
rappresenta un volto maschile con la
barba e la bocca cava . Ogni qualvolta
mariti e mogli infedeli inserivano la mano
nella cavità , la Bocca si chiudeva
catturandola .
The Mouth of Truth is a sculpture that
represents a male face with the beard and
the hollow mouth . Every time unfaithful
husbands and wives put their hands into
the hollow , the mouth closed and caught
the hands.

4. Una giovane e bellissima donna, moglie di un
patrizio romano era stata accusata di
adulterio perché riceveva visite da un altro
uomo durante l’assenza del marito.
A young and beautiful woman , wife of a
roman patrician , was accused of adultery
because she met another man while her
husband was away .

6. Quando il consorte venne a conoscenza di
questa faccenda non si lasciò intenerire dalle
lacrime della donna, che si proclamava
innocente, e pretese che lei si sottoponesse alla
“prova” della Bocca della Verità.
When the husband knew the truth, he didn’t
move to pity by woman’s tears , who said it
was not her fault . Her husband wanted she
submitted to the test of the “Mouth of
truth”.

8. Il giorno in cui la fanciulla dovette
sottoporsi
a
quell’esame, un giovane,
all’apparenza sconosciuto, si avvicinò a lei e
la baciò .
The day when the woman had to do the
test, a young man , seeming by a stranger,
came to her and gave her a kiss .

10. I presenti
volevano
scagliarsi
contro
l’intruso ma lei li convinse a lasciarlo
andare sostenendo che fosse un povero
pazzo.
Everybody wanted to rail against him but
she said to let him go away because he
was a mad man .

12. In realtà si trattava di una messa in
scena perché quando poi la giovane donna
pose la mano all’interno della Bocca potè
sostenere
fieramente
di
non aver
mai
baciato nessuno all’infuori di suo marito e
di quel povero demente , che in realtà era il
suo amante .
Actually it was a pretence and when the
woman put her hand inside the “Mouth”
showed proudly that she didn’t kiss nobody
except her husband and that mad man, who
was really her lover.

14. La mano quindi rimase intatta con grande
compiacimento del consorte ma con estrema
umiliazione della Bocca della
Verità , la
quale , abbattuta da tanta audacia , da quel
giorno non volle più “esprimersi” e non chiuse
più la bocca per punire gli spergiuri .
So her hand remained
intact
with
a big
satisfaction of her husband but with enormous
humiliation of the mouth of truth , won by so
much boldness and since day it didn’t want to
“express “ any more and didn’t close the mouth to
punish any perjuries.
