2. The governments of most countries did very little to rescue victims. At the Evian Conference in 1938 representatives from 32 countries met in Evian, France to discuss the issue of Jews seeking asylum- they decided not to take in Jewish refugees.
3. In May 1939, the SS St. Louis left Germany for Cuba carrying more than 900 Jews. Immigration laws changed and they were forced to go back to Germany. Of the 900 passengers, fewer than 300 survived
4. There were some governments, organizations, and individuals who reached out to victims and saved many lives. Anyone caught would have faced the same fate as the Jews.
5. Some refused to be silenced Hans and Sophie Scholl were college students who created the White Rose.
6. Members of the White Rose secretly distributed anti-Nazi leaflets. Since Hitler had control over all forms of communication, it was one of the few ways to speak out.
7. On February 18, 1943, a custodian saw Sophie and Hans spreading anti-Nazi leaflets in a university hallway. On February 24, 1943, Sophie, Hans, and another member were killed by guillotine for their crime.
8. Rescuers British embassy worker Frank Foley saved 10,000 Jewish lives by issuing visas for countries under British rule to Jews.
9. Rescuers Oskar Schindler was a member of the Nazi party. He persuaded them that he needed Jews for his factory in Poland. He saved the lives of 1,200 Jews.
10. Rescuers Irena Sendler smuggled 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw ghetto in body bags so the Nazis would think they were corpses. When Jewish children changed their names, she buried their names in a jar.
11. Rescuers After Kristallnacht a group of British Jews, Quakers, and other Christians created kindertransport to save Jewish children. Half went to institutions and the other half to foster homes. Many never saw their parents again 10,000 children were saved
13. Rescuers Almost all 600 Albanian Jews survived because Albanian officials forged their documents Christian and Muslim Albanians also hid Jews
14. Rescuers Imagine how many more Jews would have died if these individuals, groups, and countries had not helped. Imagine how many more Jews would have survived if more people would have helped.
