Synopsis
The report provides in depth market analysis, information and insights into the Egyptian
reinsurance market, including:
•The Egyptian reinsurance market’s growth prospects by reinsurance categories
•The Egyptian reinsurance market’s growth prospects by reinsurance ceded from direct insurance
segments
•The competitive landscape in Egyptian reinsurance insurance market
Reinsurance remains an integral part of the Egyptian insurance industry’s risk management
program and contingency plan, without which the burden of the cost of unforeseen events would
fall on the individuals involved and their direct insurers. With the exception of declines in 2009 and
2010 due to the global financial crisis and political instability, the premium ceded to reinsurance by
Egyptian direct insurers grew consistently throughout the review period. Egypt experienced a large
number of road accidents during the review period, which resulted in significant losses for the
motor insurance category. Over the forecast period, Egypt’s favorable foreign direct investment
(FDI) norms with limited restrictions on foreign companies and gradual economic growth are
expected to encourage the entry of reinsurance companies.
Scope
This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the reinsurance market in Egypt:

(2007–2011) and forecast period (2012–2016)
•It offers a detailed analysis of the key sub-segments in the Egyptian reinsurance market, along

•It provides a detailed analysis of the reinsurance ceded from various direct insurance markets in
Egypt and its growth prospects

Key highlights
•Over the forecast period (2012–2016), the continued expansion of all three Egyptian direct
insurance segments, life insurance, non-life insurance, and personal accident and health
insurance, and the presence of compulsory cession, is expected to drive the growth of the
country’s reinsurance segment.
2. •The growth of the Egyptian reinsurance segment is expected to continue over the forecast period,
driven by the continued expansion of all the country’s direct insurance segments. However,
insurance companies operating in Egypt, and motor insurance companies in particular, are
expected to have to pay higher reinsurance renewal costs due to the rising number of road
accidents in the country
•The ceding rate for Egyptian non-life insurers is very high, including both secondary ceding and
ceding to foreign insurers. This high demand for Egyptian reinsurance is expected to accelerate
the growth of the segment over the forecast period.
•As of 2011, there were no specialized reinsurance companies operating in the Egyptian
reinsurance segment, forcing insurers operating in the country to share their risk with foreign
reinsurance companies, such as African Re and Misr Insurance Company.
