2. • Bratislava is one of the European youngest capitals and
the cities with a rich history going to the times of 2000
years ago.
• The location of the city is in the heart of Europe.
• It lies on the banks of the Danube River
• That´s why Bratislava became a crossroad and aim of
business trips and a resort of many cultures.
• Now its population is
officially about
500 000 inhabitants.
3. • History of Bratislava can be monitored since the 2nd century
after Christ when Celtic tribe „Bojovia – Fighters“ came to
the place of present Bratislava.
• This tribe was famous for production of coins.
• They set up a strategic basic fortress with a defensive
function.
4. The first written mention of the Bratislava
Castle is going to the first
millennium after Christ to the year 907.
5. • In the 13th century Bratislava got royal privilegies.
• The important period in the history belongs to the end of
the 14th and beginnng of 15th century for the Jigmund
Luxembourg government.
• In 1436 Bratislava got the privillegy from he King of
Zigmund to use own coat of arms :
three towers and
the falling grill
in the city walls.
6. Bratislava was the coronation town and
11 kings and queens were crowned in
the Dome of St. Martin
in the period of 1536 to 1830.
7. • Bratislava called Pressburg flourished during
the 18th-century reign of the Queen Maria Theresa.
• A lot of many beautiful palaces, churches, monasters
and other historic buildings were built in this time.
8. • The first world war was an important milestone in the
history of the city.
• In 1918 the Czech-Slovak Republic was created and the
city called Pressesburg, Pozsony and Prešporok, became the
part of the Czech- Slovak Republic in January 1919.
• The new name of the city was approved on March 27,
1919 and Bratislava appeared on the map of Europe.
9. • With the breakdown of Czechoslovakia Bratislava became the
capital of separate Slovakia on 1 January 1993.
• Today Bratislava is the political, cultural and economic centre of
Slovakia.
• It is the seat of the Slovak Presidents,
Slovak Parliament and the Slovak Executive.
• It has several universities and many museums, theatres,
galleries and other cultural and educational institutions.
