We expect a lot from the intranet home page and it can play many roles in an organisation. This presentation features many screenshots whilst exploring the purposes of the home page and what that might look like.

Notas do Editor
Guessing you are hear to have a sticky beak at other’s home pages... Well you are in the right placeWe have seen many homepages over the last day and a bit and you are about to see more… but lets start with you….
A blast from the 80’s
A new construction
A work in progress
Mix of old and new
futuristic
And anyone?
The big question is..
Or both
Before we get into looking at the examples, here are 7 roles of the intranet home page.
Hands up if you’re your contains all 7? Does it need to? Consider what your organisation is ready for. As I take you through the examples, tick each off on your notes which you have and what balance and additions you need for your homepage. Often it’s about taking your staff on a journey… not ready for personalisation yet, start with audience and location targeting, not ready for collaboration, start with commenting on news and including a list of project or collaboration spaces staff are a member of on the home page. We all know about news… anyone have a home page without news or communications? If you do see me afterwards and I have a surprise for you Culture…not quite ready for this guy (Alphie, or buzz) to be the face of your intranet? Then perhaps start with a professional look and feel that depict your organisation.
Today I’m going to show you on a journey of homepages that work. They work for their staff and they work for the organisation they belong to. Will they work for you? Not in all cases but you will get lots of ideas on what others are doing and how to make your homepage work. Ok, jump on board and let’s take a journey through the world of the modern intranet homepage
And of course how better to start than with Jonathan’s CCE homepage that we saw yesterday
What do you think? It’s modern, I’m a fan of the way they have grouped communication, collaboration and transactionConsistent experience, local, global and targeted communicationEmbeded social and that all important integration with SAP allowing staff to complete all of those HR tasks
And it’s responsive in design
Speaking of responsive design. The Department of Human Services have done it really well. It’s special because of it’s responsive design depending on the device you are using. How many of you have an intranet that automatically adjusts dependent on the device or screen size people are using?
It’s clean, professional and fits the organisation showing network reliability, safety and scorecard – important for an organisation that’s goal is to manage a safe and reliable electricity network
What do you think of when I say the word Auditor?? The guy in the cardigan? Well that’s what the audit office think of, so much so, Alfie the auditor is the intranet, he’s part of the organization and matches the culture. He’s also evolved over the years and now wears a slightly more modern cardigan For these guys it is about really making sure it suits the organisation…
As we would expect from News Limited, a professional, smart looking homepage. A large proportion of the home page dedicated to News but after all, they are News Limited
Another from the energy industry, what do you think? Clean simple design?
Asciano combination of Pacific National’s rail operations with Patrick ports and stevedoring
Back to fitting the intranet to the culture of the organisation. At Canon, imagry is the heart of what they do, Pixel is their character and their home page features image of the week to allow staff to share their amazing photos
Now we meet Simon, SunWater’s intranet…
Selling gardening products, won one of our Intranet Innovation Awards for how they brought their customer into the organisation via the intranet home page.
It’s all about choice… giving you ultimate say in how your homepage behaves,
This is what I think a modern homepage isClean and professional – we are very visual people, how many of you judge what you see on a website by how it looks on first impressionUseful – an essential part… we all know by now that if it’s not meeting a business need and useful then what are we doing here?Targeted – in this information age, we are saturated with information, the more we can target what our user sees the more useful it will beWhat’s going to work for one won’t work for all… think about your culture… Is Alfie or Simon going to work for you? Or perhaps a more corporate feelMany of us have talked about the journey… Jonathan is already sketching his next homepage… we need to be evolving to suit the changing environment and get your intranet singing
