Abstract ePortfolios were piloted to deliver project-based research training. Manual project tracking dominated program communications, adding little to learning engagement. ePortfolios reduced email traffic for the current cohort, projected to be significantly less compared to the previous cohort (p=.02 using an unpaired t-test, eliminating one outlier and p=.68 when including outlier), strengthening the case for eportfolio adoption in more clinical and translational research training programs. Session Description The Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research (MICHR) piloted Foliotek ePortfolios for 9 scholars in the Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) program. Engaged training is achieved through a mentored research project that lasts through the one year duration of the MSCR program. ePortfolios were piloted in this course to deliver and support project-based learning. Mentored projects warrant regular monitoring for timely intervention. Manual project tracking dominated program-scholar communications, which added little learning value. Foliotek eportfolios automated reporting on project milestones and deliverables. This allowed learners and the program manager to engage in creative problem solving, as opposed to chasing status updates. This pilot lays the groundwork for introducing eportfolios in other MICHR programs that use high impact practices to train future clinical and translational researchers.

Please contact Docebo at http://www.docebo.com for more information. The corporate HR systems landscape is multi-dimensional. As well as core HR data and systems, companies typically have many systems for managing recruiting, learning, and talent processes, as well as their line of business applications. Whether you have an HR Suite or Best of Breed applications (or both!) creating a coherent picture of your people is both complex and difficult to manage. But HR is increasingly being challenged to do just that - integrate its people data and deliver joined up business processes that transcend the functional silos and systems landscape. Drivers, challenges and benefits of integrating your HR systems landscape, including: - The complexity of corporate HR and functional systems landscape today - The challenges in really joining up the people data picture and the drivers to do so - How key people data elements are critical for driving real business outcomes from talent and learning - The role of LMS as a central hub for integration between HR, Talent and Work - How HR and Learning leaders need and can work with IT to address these challenges

Scholars in a global health research program are introduced to clinical and translational research through a three-week mentored research experience in Kenya. In this short time scholars have a packed learning agenda and a number of skills to master: a learning and assessment challenge. Previous attempts to capture scholar’s progression in certain aspects of clinical and translational research were limited to summative assessments by mentors. These were helpful to indicate overall competence, but found to be inadequate for understanding the learning in the context of clinical & translational research competencies. Our goal was to collect reflections using an online tool. The tool would be expected to function even when access to technology could be sporadic. A multi-author blog was used to gather reflections during the scholars’ time in Kenya. Reflections on their field-based research would reveal their learning and development as researchers. Four scholars submitted thirteen reflections over a three-week period. Reflections were reviewed for progression toward CTSA core competency domains. Results showed that scholar postings often veered away from reflective writing. While the technology, Google Blogger, worked well, the pre-flight training in reflective-writing was identified as a key area for improvement for future reflective-writing based assessment.

Since 2008, scholars at the University of Michigan have been mentored in writing their NIH (K) career award applications as a part of a 3 session face-to-face (F2F) workshop. Each session focused on a section of the award application. Sessions started with a lecture followed by small group activity to get peer and mentor feedback. Working on award applications in small groups with mentors and peers provided a rich experience. Significant F2F time was spent on the lecture, a passive learning activity. We sought to maximize the active learning time in the F2F sessions without increasing the overall session length.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Discover how Victor can help you on victorrentea.ro : company training catalog, consultancy and YouTube playlists.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.
