ShelterBox deploys to three disasters in 48 hours
ShelterBox, international disaster relief organisation and the largest global Rotary
club project, is responding to Typhoon Morakot after tens of thousands of people
have been left stranded in the storm’s wake. During the past several days, the
storm has passed over the Philippines, Taiwan and mainland China, leaving a trail
of destruction.

High winds, flooding and mudslides have left thousands in need of emergency
shelter. In Taiwan, 50,000 people are stranded and flooding has submerged many
homes. In China nearly 1 million people have been evacuated in the Fujian
Province while 13,000 people have been displaced in the Zambales Province in
the Philippines with authorities describing the situation as a calamity. Typhoon
Morakot has brought with it a record amount of rainfall with close to 2.5 metres
falling on Taiwan.

ShelterBox is providing emergency disaster relief on all three fronts. ShelterBox
Response Team (SRT) members ‘Aussie’ Peter Pearce (Aust) and Ross
Mackenzie (NZ) are already on the ground in the Philippines, SRT members
David Ray (UK), Philip Duloy (UK) and Mike Greenslade (UK) will arrive in Taipei,
Taiwan today and SRT member Tony Zhang (CH) is assessing the situation in
China.

224 ShelterBoxes are in transit to the Philippines and 100 ShelterBoxes have
been sent to Taiwan. Our SRT leaders will continue to assess the need and
respond accordingly.

ShelterBox Founder Tom Henderson said: ‘This is a textbook ShelterBox
operation. We’ve been watching this for a few days and monitoring the situation.
We now have teams in place on all three fronts that will be providing emergency
disaster relief as quickly as possible. With each ShelterBox containing a 10-
person tent, blankets, water purification and cooking equipment, basic tools, a
stove and other essential equipment, we not only provide people with emergency
shelter provision but also the tools to start rebuilding their lives.’

Further updates and photographs of our disaster relief will be sent as they come
to hand.

3,000+ sheltered by ShelterBox

ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members Peter ‘Aussie Pete’ Pearce, Ross Mackenzie (NZ), Lizzy
Treglown (UK) and Denise Ho (USA) are working together as part of the global ShelterBox
response to assist those displaced by Typhoon Morakot in the Philippines.

To date, over 3,000 survivors have been housed with safety and dignity thanks to the delivery of
334 ShelterBoxes and 8 School boxes sponsored by Rotarians around the world.

Working closely with the Army and the Philippine government, our SRT members oversaw the
clearing, back-fill and occupation of specifically set up ShelterBox villages. ‘Aussie Pete’ praised
the assistance of his fellow Rotarians and said “it is extremely gratifying to be an integral part of
uniting families again after this disaster and providing them with hope to start over.”

As our international SRT colleagues head home, Rotarian and SRT member Hans Van Dyk landed
in Manilla last night to assist ‘Aussie Pete’ with the final leg of the deployment – to set up yet
another ShelterBox village.

ShelterBox, Rotarians and World Vision team together
Rotarian and SRT member Keith Robins reports that in Taimali (city in Taitung), Taipei the river
burst its boundaries to cause massive flooding, decimating bridges and roads. Normally about 100
feet wide and now a massive half a mile wide it wiped out the town on Taimali causing many
millions of tonnes of trees and debris to wash out to sea and destroyed all homes in its path.

Working with World Vision, ShelterBox SRT members visited the village of Jiedah (Jinfong region)
and assisted those who had lost their homes to the flooding created by Typhoon Morakot.

With another delivery of ShelterBoxes to assist those affected by
Typhoon Morakot, we need your help to replenish our reserve stock in
Melbourne in readiness for the next disaster within our region.
We thank you for your support.

During the past several days, the storm has passed over the Philippines, Taiwan and mainland China, leaving a trail of destruction. High winds, flooding and mudslides have left thousands in need of emergency shelter. In Taiwan, 50,000 people are stranded and flooding has submerged many homes. In China nearly 1 million people have been evacuated in the Fujian Province while 13,000 people have been displaced in the Zambales Province in the Philippines with authorities describing the situation as a calamity. Typhoon Morakot has brought with it a record amount of rainfall with close to 2.5 metres falling on Taiwan. ShelterBox is providing emergency disaster relief on all three fronts. ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members ‘Aussie’ Peter Pearce (Aust) and Ross Mackenzie (NZ) are already on the ground in the Philippines, SRT members David Ray (UK), Philip Duloy (UK) and Mike Greenslade (UK) will arrive in Taipei, Taiwan today and SRT member Tony Zhang (CH) is assessing the situation in China. 224 ShelterBoxes are in transit to the Philippines and 100 ShelterBoxes have been sent to Taiwan. Our SRT leaders will continue to assess the need and respond accordingly. ShelterBox Founder Tom Henderson said: ‘This is a textbook ShelterBox operation. We’ve been watching this for a few days and monitoring the situation. We now have teams in place on all three fronts that will be providing emergency disaster relief as quickly as possible. With each ShelterBox containing a 10- person tent, blankets, water purification and cooking equipment, basic tools, a stove and other essential equipment, we not only provide people with emergency shelter provision but also the tools to start rebuilding their lives.’ Further updates and photographs of our disaster relief will be sent as they come to hand. News Update 25 August, 2009 A project in Australia of the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills 3,000+ sheltered by ShelterBox ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members Peter ‘Aussie Pete’ Pearce, Ross Mackenzie (NZ), Lizzy Treglown (UK) and Denise Ho (USA) are working together as part of the global ShelterBox response to assist those displaced by Typhoon Morakot in the Philippines. To date, over 3,000 survivors have been housed with safety and dignity thanks to the delivery of 334 ShelterBoxes and 8 School boxes sponsored by Rotarians around the world. Working closely with the Army and the Philippine government, our SRT members oversaw the clearing, back-fill and occupation of specifically set up ShelterBox villages. ‘Aussie Pete’ praised the assistance of his fellow Rotarians and said “it is extremely gratifying to be an integral part of uniting families again after this disaster and providing them with hope to start over.” As our international SRT colleagues head home, Rotarian and SRT member Hans Van Dyk landed in Manilla last night to assist ‘Aussie Pete’ with the final leg of the deployment – to set up yet another ShelterBox village. ! !"## $$! %!" ShelterBox, Rotarians and World Vision team together Rotarian and SRT member Keith Robins reports that in Taimali (city in Taitung), Taipei the river burst its boundaries to cause massive flooding, decimating bridges and roads. Normally about 100 feet wide and now a massive half a mile wide it wiped out the town on Taimali causing many millions of tonnes of trees and debris to wash out to sea and destroyed all homes in its path. Working with World Vision, ShelterBox SRT members visited the village of Jiedah (Jinfong region) and assisted those who had lost their homes to the flooding created by Typhoon Morakot. With another delivery of ShelterBoxes to assist those affected by Typhoon Morakot, we need your help to replenish our reserve stock in Melbourne in readiness for the next disaster within our region.
