A project in Australia of the
Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills

In just twelve days, ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) members have assessed and assisted more
than 8,000 survivors in the Sumatra area with emergency ShelterBox housing. The following is an
excerpt from SRT Mike Greenslade’s reports together with his pictorial of events as they support
those who have lost everything.
Saturday October 10, 2009. “We received our supplies for a camp we are building in the Agam
area (some 4 hours drive north of Padang) where they lost their houses due to a landslide. Free
transport was provided and we managed to get 100 ShelterBoxes in but have to wait for Oxfam to
complete the sorting of water and sanitation. We will return tomorrow to start our building.
We dropped another 15 ShelterBoxes in Jawi Duku and have organised a drop helicopter (courtesy
of US Navy) tomorrow to an isolated village called Padang Alai and will also check out for other
remote areas that need our help when up in the Chinook. 177 ShelterBoxes arrived today, a
further 360 tomorrow and probably more on the way.
Transportation is not an issue for us as we have the support of free trucks, free choppers (US
Navy) and free C130s (Australian/American/Indonesian Air Forces).

7. Sunday October 11, 2009. Busy day today both on the ground and in the air. The RAAF flew in
144 ShelterBoxes and a further 164 were flown in by Garuda paid for by Rotary District 3400 of
Jakarta. One SRT team completed an aerial survey in a US Navy Puma helicopter and confirmed
the remote village of Hula Banda was in dire need of emergency shelter. We are receiving
generous co-operation from USAID and the US Navy who flew 45 ShelterBoxes and a 3 man SRT
plus local volunteers to assist us.”
Samoan school back to normal thanks to ShelterBox
New Zealand SRT members Owen Smith and Walter Van der Kley distributed 20 ShelterBoxes to
families currently living in the Ulutogia Primary School. At the request of Red Cross, this now
means the children of the village can return to their school and begin some normality in their lives.
With the assistance of the Rotary Club of Apia members, Owen and Walter assisted families also in
the Lepa, Saliapaga and Satitoa back areas of Samoa with the distribution of 80 ShelterBoxes so
far.
Owen said: “Believe me, the survivors of this disaster and very, very grateful to Rotary and to
ShelterBox for their help – they now have a home to start over again.”

8. Below is a letter just received from ADG Slade in District 9920.
“I am and would like to say how wonderful it has been to work with the ShelterBox gentlemen:
Owen from Kerikeri Rotary Club and Walter from Ashburton Rotary Club. They have done the
greatest of jobs on the coast considering only two of them with assistance from Apia Rotary
members 78 of the best tents have been distributed and installed within a short time after the
tsunami. The accompanied components of these kits to catch and purify water plus the tools,
mosquito nets and comforting blankets are just the most ideal blessings for the victims. One old
man yelled out to me 'thank you for the mosquito net. I was worried the mosquitoes were going
to kill me after surviving the tsunami'. ShelterBoxes is the perfect way to help these people get
back on their feet.
Last Saturday at the coast Rotary was the only organisation on the road working. Not even Red
Cross were there. We had a group of vehicles of ShelterBoxes followed by the Emergency Boxes
and distributed the last 40 ShelterBoxes and 50 Emergency Boxes. It was the greatest gifts
before White Sunday. Everybody is talking about the Rotary Tents to be the best ones around
and everybody wants one.
I am humbly proud to be a Rotarian and we may not be as loud as Red Cross but we are certainly
doing a great job going straight to the needy and touching the hearts of the people. To see the
tears in their eyes as they hug you and the grateful smiles as they say 'thank you' convinces you
Rotary has made the difference in their lives.

Extended tour for Aussie SRT in Philippines
Rotarian and volunteer SRT Peter Pearce has virtually spent the last six weeks in disasters helping
those survivors who have lost everything in Manila, the Philippines. Another 197 ShelterBoxes will
be delivered to tomorrow and our SRT members will also visit the Botolan region where 310
ShelterBoxes were set up last month. This region has again been hit with extreme weather.
