• Isaiah prophesied from approximately 740–701 B.C.
Isaiah
• During his lifetime Israel rose in prosperity and
struggled with idolatry.
• The unrighteousness of the people led to spiritual
weakness and political peril.
• Israel became subject to the military power of

• Record from 600 B.C. to 400 A.D.
Nephites
• During this period the Nephites and the Lamanites
rose in prosperity and struggled with idolatry.
• The unrighteousness of the people led to spiritual
weakness and political peril.
• Nephites and Lamanites were subjected to military
oppression, and eventually destroyed each other
• Trials and tribulations—But in end—And after it had come
forth unto them I beheld other books, which came forth by the
power of the Lamb . . . unto the convincing of . . . the remnant
of the seed of my brethren . . . that the records of the prophets
and of the twelve apostles of the Lamb are true.
4. • The Lord has blessed us as a people with a prosperity
unequaled in times past. The resources that have been
placed in our power are good, and necessary to our work
here on the earth. But I am afraid that many of us have been
surfeited with flocks and herds and acres and barns and
wealth and have begun to worship them as false gods, and
they have power over us.—Pres. Kimball 1976
Modern Revelation
• There is a portent of stormy weather ahead to which
we had better give heed.—Pres. Hinckley 1998
• ―We ought to have the building up of Zion as our greatest
object… The time is soon coming, when no man will have
peace but in Zion and her stakes.‖ (Teachings of the Prophet

Reflection
How do we liken the scriptures unto ourselves for
―profit and learning‖?
Questions like the following ones can help us profitably apply the
scriptures to our lives:
What significance does this particular event or principle have for
me today?
What does the rebellion of Laman and Lemuel teach me?
What can I learn about faithfulness from Nephi’s obedience?
If I were in this particular situation or faced with this challenge or
question, how would I react?
