Bruna Moreira created the Big Open Source Sister (BOSS) mentoring program to welcome and guide underrepresented groups through contributing to open source communities. The program focuses on teaching the basics of open source through a 12-week online class, mentorship, and hands-on practices contributing to the LAPPIS rasa boilerplate project. Participants gain autonomy to contribute to other open source projects after completing the program.

Python for Zombies MOOC is the first brazilian MOOC to teach programming. With a team made up of three folks and no budget, we have reached 42.000 enrollments in two years of activity. After having taken the course, some former girl students even founded the first PyLadies groups in Brazil. There are a lot of Massive Open Online Courses that teach programming in Python (Coursera, Edx, Udacity), but only 5% of the Brazilian people are fluent in English. For this reason, the Brazilian Python community took the initiative to develop the first MOOC to teach programming in Portuguese. É uma iniciativa de três pessoas que não contaram com nenhum recurso financeiro, além do próprio investimento pessoal. Todo material é licenciado como Creative Commons Share Alike, permitindo a docentes de outras instituições fazerem reuso dos slides, listas de exercícios, etc. Nesta palestra você não verá nada de teoria, veremos os códigos que mais fizeram a alegria zumbi: hackear dados públicos para calcular os gastos da Copa do Mundo, games clássicos diretamente no navegador, metaprogramação 42 (resposta para tudo), pegar os resultados dos jogos da copa com poucas linhas e muito mais. This presentation covers the TelaSocial project, how it got started within the ICMC-USP community, part of University of Sao Paulo. It covers the open-based goals of the project and specific scenarios related to the pilot program at the ICMC, the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science in Sao Carlos, Brazil. While the presentation covers the pilot case the messages within this documentation does not represent messages from ICMC. TelaSocial is a social-aware Web-based solution for kiosks. It uses an open model and aims for display-based system that does not get data from traditional broadcast. Instead, it uses the Web and promotes participation for public spaces. The project started in Brazil and we are looking for partners to move on in the direction of open education and to help communities with a participatory solution.

Similarly, the medium for human-to-machine conversation has moved from text (chatbots) to voice, with voice-enabled chatbots in wide use today. The next step in this evolution is a video-enabled conversational experience. Each medium change brings its own technical challenges. Creating a good voice experience involves more than just hooking up a chatbot to a text-to-speech and speech-to-text service. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
