2. Understanding Others Is A Key Element
To Success In Life
We all want success in life. Regardless of our definition of success, or the path we take in
life, we have to learn to deal with people. How we deal with people will determine, to a large
degree, how successful we are in any area of life. In “What Makes People Click” you will
learn:
• Why people do what they do
• Why you do what you do
• How to relate to others successfully
• How to develop traits that will bring success
• Why people ‘connect’, and why they don’t
• How to ‘read’ people
You will gain an understanding of others, and yourself, that will launch you into a whole new
level of success. You will learn, in simple terms, how to become the person you have always
wanted to be!
4. From the time we are born until the time we die, we all experience a wide
variety of relationships. There are family relationships, within which are a host of
dynamics. There are friendships, as well as co-worker relationships. Every day we
are presented with various kinds of relationships.
No matter where you go, or what you do, people, and the opportunity to be in
relation to them, will always be present. The ability to develop meaningful
relations within each of these situations can certainly determine a measure of self-
satisfaction, and personal success.
So, true success, however you define it can, in this area, be defined by our
ability to interact in a healthy way with others. What truly matters is this: when we
get to the end of our journey, how many people have we had a positive impact on?
We are writing our legacy everyday in the people around us, even if we don’t realize
it.
Our accomplishments may be remembered, but the lasting impression we leave
in this world is how we have affected other people. The problem we have in
relationships is that people skills do not come naturally. We are not born with the
knowledge of how to develop healthy relationships. We have to learn those skills.
The good news is we can learn these skills.
5. My goal in writing this book is to help you become a better friend, co-worker,
spouse, etc. We have to have an understanding of how people think, and how they
view the world around them. As we take this journey, we will also learn some things
that will help us better understand ourselves.
Self-discovery is also part of the process. Understanding why you do what you
do helps you to understand why others do what they do. We are all different, but
there are some basic skills that we can apply to help us accomplish this goal.
The area we will focus on in this book is a simplified understanding of
personality types, their differences, and how to relate to each of them. We have to
understand that each of us possesses a unique personality type which helps to
shape the way we process the world around us.
The first thing we need to realize is that personality, for the most part, is not
genetic. It is a learned behavior. We develop our personalities based on what we
perceive will work in our world. We see what is happening around us, and decide
how we need to respond.
When dealing with others, we don’t need to know the ‘why’ of how their
personality developed a certain way. We only need to recognize the traits of their
personality so we can better understand how to relate to them. When we try to
uncover the ‘why’, we run the risk of overstepping our boundaries with others.
6. We will look at four basic personality types. What we need to know from the
start is that there is no right or wrong personality type. There is not one that is
better than the other. They just simply exist. I also want to point out that each of us
exhibits all four types.
What happens is that one or two become more prevalent than the other types.
This is caused by several factors….environment, culture, education, etc. This
should not be a tool to analyze others; rather, it should be a tool to gain greater
understanding of yourself and others.
The four personality types are D, I, S, and C. It is known as DISC personality
profile. There are other profile methods that list the personalities differently, but I
have found this profile easier to understand for everyday use. We will not get into
the profile very deeply.
We will focus on the basics, as that is all we really need to be able to relate to
others better. As we go through each personality type, you will have ‘Aha’ moments,
where you will recognize different traits of each personality type that will remind
you of people you know. You will also see yourself. It may be a little weird, actually.
Just remember to have fun with it!
7. We will also learn how to take this knowledge, and adapt our own
personalities to situations we face that require a different approach than our
primary personality allows. Remember, as we move along, that some traits
in each personality look similar to other personalities.
We are not looking for just specific traits; we are looking for a pattern of
traits to help us identify the personality patterns of others. I believe you will
be amazed at how understanding personality patterns will help you in your
various relationships. You will also be amazed at how understanding your
particular personality pattern will help you grow, and that’s the best news!
