2. What is
TRIZ?
• TRIZ is a premier disruptive technology for innovation that can
be used throughout many industries and sciences. Elements of
TRIZ can be effectively used by a wide range of people -- from
children to adults. The genesis of TRIZ is derived from empirical
data, patents. The documentation of how inventive people
solved inventive problems.
• As can be learned from his biography, Genrick Altshuller analyzed
thousands of worldwide patents from the leading engineering
fields. He then analyzed solutions that were, in his judgment,
most effective. This work provided the first understanding of the
trends, or patterns, of evolution for technical systems. It also laid
the foundation for the development of an analytical approach to
solving inventive problems, later becoming the foundation for
TRIZ, his theory of inventive problem solving, with its axioms:

• In the previous slide, you can
find a long list of tools used for
problem solving and innovation
• Though these tools have been
used by many, most of them are
not meant to be used both for
problem solving and innovation.
• There are very few tools which
can be used for both these
applications and TRIZ is the most
prominent and effective one
among them.
• TRIZ is also one of the very
systematic innovation tools
available and hence is preferred
by most scientists and engineers.

9. Contradictions
• One of the most important inventions of
Altshuller was the 39 x 39 contradiction
matrix
• Based on the analysis of over 200,000
patents he said that most of the patents solve
a contradiction in the system.
• This contradiction was tabled in a matrix and
the solutions for each combination was
mentioned in the form of 40 principles.
• This matrix has proven to be a boon for many
Engineers and scientists who have used this to
solve some of the most complex problems
